KFDM COOP Posted February 11, 2008 Author Report Posted February 11, 2008 7-on-7 FOOTBALL: Rules changes, schedule set at meeting For Class 5A and 4A schools) • May 17: Manvel and Cy Falls • May 24 and 25: Houston Texans Training Center (two 16-team events hosted by Baytown Lee) • May 31: Cy Creek, Terry and Texas City • June 7: Cinco Ranch, The Woodlands and Austin Lake Travis • June 14: Dulles, A&M Consolidated and San Antonio Alamo Heights • June 21: Lufkin • June 28: Corpus Christi Ray and Hays Consolidated • July 10-12: State Tournament at Texas A&M University in College Station For more information, visit the Web site at www.state7on7.com . Mouthpieces will be mandatory for all players during summer 7-on-7 football state qualifying tournaments and at the July 10-12 State Tournament at Texas A&M University in College Station. That was one of many decisions made by state president Tim Teykl and officials at the State 7-on-7 Board of Directors Meeting on Jan. 23 in San Marcos. "It was a unanimous call on the mouthpieces and we feel really good about it," said Teykl, Terry's football coach and campus athletics coordinator. "It's huge because even though 7-on-7 is for the most part non-contact, there is a lot of incidental contact which can lead to mouth and tooth damage. "We've also formed a committee to look into finding a sponsor for mouthpieces, but that's in the exploratory stages." The 2008 Division I (Class 5A and 4A) South schedule includes May 17 season-opening events at Cy Falls and Manvel, and a 32-team, two-day extravaganza at the Houston Texans training facility hosted by Baytown Lee on May 24-25. Additional area SQTs are at Cy Creek, Terry and Texas City on May 31; Cinco Ranch and The Woodlands on June 7; and Dulles and A&M Consolidated on June 14. "About 90 percent of the state qualifying tournaments are on high school campuses, and that's really a good situation for us," Teykl said. "When colleges run tournaments, there are so many different departments to deal with, so high school venues really work well for 7-on-7." Division II (Class 3A-A) South events present travel time and cost for area schools at locations like China Springs, Hardin, Normangee, Bandera, Cuero, Diboll, La Villa and Navasota. "Division II will stay with 32 teams advancing to the state tournament for at least one more year," Teykl said. "We'll look at increasing it to 64 in the future, like we have in Division I." The complete 2008 schedule, rules and other information can be found at 7-on-7's official Web site www.state7on7.com. "We want to beg and plead with newspapers, Texas Football (Magazine) and other sites that our Web site is the official Web site," Teykl said. "There's so many different sites out there listing old rules and information, and we want to make it as concise, simple and easy as we can for everyone to get the right information, and that's at www.state7on7.com." The 2008 state 7-on-7 board of directors executive committee consists of executive director Doug Stephens (Southlake Carroll), Teykl, vice president Don Byrd (San Antonio Alamo Heights) and treasurer Wayne Hooks. Board members also include south director Dick Olin (Baytown Lee), Don Clayton (Cinco Ranch), Les Koenning, Greg McCaig (Cy Creek) and Mike Sneed (Second Baptist). Members also voted to add one official to state tournament games bringing the total number to four. "We're hoping that eventually trickles down to the state qualifying tournaments," Teykl said. "There's a lot of action all over the field for three officials to keep an eye on." Georgetown defeated Stratford in last year's Division I state championship game, and in the first Division II state finals, Celina downed Crane.

Please, complete the form, save it, then email it as an attachment to Brandon Houston at [email protected] This is not the official team roster due at registration. That form may be downloaded here. Also, we will need contact information for each school participating in the State Tournament. At least one of the numbers should be a cell phone in the event we need to contact you during the tournament itself.
