Guest Ozen Posted January 31, 2008 Report Posted January 31, 2008 La Marque’s Jones gets Andrews ISD interview By Corey Roepken The Daily News Published January 31, 2008 LA MARQUE — La Marque High School athletic director and football coach Chris Jones is one of eight men who will interview for the same position at Andrews High School. Jones, who has been the head coach at La Marque for one season, was one of 96 applicants for the Class 3A job in West Texas. The school district originally hoped to hire before Friday’s UIL realignment, but the interviews will not be conducted until next week. Jones said Wednesday night his decision to apply for the job after only one year at La Marque is based solely on his family’s best interest. His wife is from Lubbock. Andrews is roughly two hours from Lubbock. “My wife has been away from there for 12 years, and I took her away as a football coach,†Jones said. “(Applying for the Andrews job) is all family-related. That’s all it has ever been.†Jones came to La Marque after four years as head coach at Class 2A Refugio. He compiled a 34-14 record and won three district titles. In 2006, his team went 11-2 and lost in the regional semifinals. In one season at La Marque, Jones led the Coogs to a 9-3 record and a second-place tie in District 23-4A. La Marque lost in the second round of the Division II playoffs. It was the first time in six years and the second time in 16 years the Coogs did not advance to the regional championship game. The other seven men who will be interviewed for the Andrews job are Littlefield head coach and athletic director Bryan Huseman; former Canyon Randall coach Alan Cornelius; Greenville head coach and athletic director Jeff Cordell; McCamey head coach and athletic director Jay McWilliams; Sweetwater assistant and former Andrews assistant Al Hunt; Sweetwater head coach and athletic director Kent Jackson; Goldthwaite athletic director and head coach Gary Proffitt. Jones said it is an honor to be one of the eight remaining applicants. “We’ve done a lot of praying about it,†Jones said. “It may not be in God’s plan for us to be out there when it’s all said and done. It may turn out He wants us to be here in La Marque.â€
