Crosby football player Roshaad Andre Mayweather, 17, died Thursday afternoon at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital from injuries suffered in a car crash that occurred on Barbers Hill Road earlier that morning.

Investigators said foggy conditions likely contributed to the two-car collision.

Witnesses who spoke with Mayweather while he waited to be removed from the vehicle said the Crosby varsity football player was conscious and talking to the paramedics, Crosby superintendent Mike Joseph.

It appeared that only Mayweather’s leg was injured in the crash, he said.

Crosby High School principal Marley Morris and athletic director Kevin Flanigan were at the hospital with Mayweather’s mother while the teenager underwent surgery.

He did not survive, and was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon.

Flanigan said Mayweather will be dearly missed by his classmates and his team.

The coach added that although Roshaad was real quiet, he was very well respected.

“He was a leader and a great kid to have in the locker room. He talked about going to Blinn College and trying to get on the team,†Flanigan said. “The kids loved him and the coaches loved him. He had a big heart. When I came in at 3:30 p.m. and school was out there were guys in the locker room lifting weights, I have never seen it in such a somber mood.â€
