Lamar looks for 6-0 start to conference play

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team looks to improve to 5-0 in Southland Conference play, and remain perfect at home this season, when they take on the Lady Demons of Northwestern State on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Lamar University women's basketball team looks to improve to 6-0 in Southland Conference play, and remain perfect at home this season, when they take on the Cowgirls of McNeese State at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Montagne Center. The game is the opener of a double header with the men's teams who tips off against McNeese at 7 p.m.

The 5-0 start to Southland Conference play is the best start in the history of the Lamar program, within the SLC. The best ever conference record was 12-0, accomplished by the 1990-91 team.

The Lady Cardinals enter the game with a 12-6 overall record and a 5-0 record in Southland Conference play, on the heels of a 56-47 win over Northwestern State last Saturday at the Montagne Center.

Lamar is led in scoring by freshman Tamara Abalde, who is averaging team highs with 17.2 points per game along with 7.6 rebounds per game, while junior Nikki Williams is averaging 13.4 points per game and has a team-high 74 assists and 45 steals. Sophomore Brittney Williams is averaging 13.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and senior Aida Bakhos is second on the team with 7.4 rebounds per game.

As a team the Lady Cardinals are shooting .397 from the field and are averaging 65.2 points per game while allowing 62.8 points per game. Lamar has controlled the boards this season, out rebounding their opponents 39.8 to 36.6.

McNeese State enters the game with a 4-15 season record and a 2-3 mark in SLC play, on the heels of a pair of losses to Northwestern State and Central Arkansas last week. 

The Cowgirls are led by Courtnee Hollins' 14.7 points per game, while Brittany Boone is averaging 9.0 points per game.

As a team McNeese is averaging 57.9 points per game, while allowing their opponents to score 77.1 points per contest. They are shooting .333 from the field, while their opponents are connecting on .445 of their shots.

After Saturday's game the Lady Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday night when they host Nicholls State at 7 p.m. at the Montagne Center.
