KFDM COOP Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 Kingwood has no trouble putting away Lee By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published February 2, 2008 - Updated 34 minutes ago Under next year’s district alignment, Lee will no longer face Kingwood. It couldn’t come soon enough for Lee head coach Criss Dippel. In the District 21-5A soccer opener Friday night, the Ganders took it on the chin against the Mustangs in a 7-0 whitewashing. Entering the game, Dippel noted that it would be the last time Kingwood would play at Sultis Stadium in a district contest, at least for the next two years. That is apparently a good thing. “Thank the Lord for the new alignment,†Dippel said. The loss was identical to last year’s district opener. In this year’s loss, a shorthanded Ganders team fell behind 3-0 in the first half and gave up four goals in the second half as Kingwood improved to 10-1-1 overall and 1-0 in District 21-5A. Lee played without three starters that were forced to sit out because of red cards in the La Porte game. Of those three, Aaron Rodriguez and Octavio Torres are expected back against Sterling on Tuesday night while forward Benito Huerta will miss further action. “Huerta will be suspended for two to three games for violation of team rules,†Dippel said. “We need to come together as a team and get on the same page.†With two starting defenders out of the lineup, Lee started out in a 5-3-2 but was unable to force the action past midfield. Trailing 1-0, the Ganders went to their standard 4-4-3 alignment and quickly gave up another goal. Lee settled down but gave up another goal with two minutes remaining in the half. “We had to change and go back to doing what we do best,†Dippel said. “The problem was we stood around and watched Kingwood play. We can play better than that. We were just too timid.†Among those standing out in the first half for Lee were Patrick Christian, Manuel Flores and Adrian Ollivierre. No one looked particularly good in the second half as Kingwood put the game away with three goals in the first 15 minutes. Lee (3-3, 0-1) will return to action on Tuesday at 5 p.m. when it takes on Sterling at Stallworth Stadium. Sterling girls 9, Humble 0 The Lady Rangers scored early and often, posting seven goals in the first half to cruise in a 9-0 win over Humble in the District 21-5A opener for both teams. Shannon Allport posted a hat trick with three goals to pace Sterling as it improved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-0 in district. Erin Yzquierdo scored two goals for Sterling while Rachel Mescall, Paolo Bear, Megan Purswell and Iris Martinez each scored one. The defense also had an outstanding game, limiting Humble to five shots on goal, none of which seriously challenged keeper Shelby May. Sterling will take on Lee at Stallworth Stadium, Tuesday at 7 p.m. Sterling boys 1, Humble 1 HUMBLE — Sterling’s Rangers dominated Friday night’s District 21-5A soccer opener at Humble everywhere but the scoreboard and came home with a tie. The league has quit using shootouts to decide ties. Too bad they don’t use stats, because the Rangers outshot the Wildcats 15-4 by coach Jim Richter’s count. “If we finished a little better, it would have been 8-1,†he said. “We have a hard time scoring goals. But I’m not going to panic yet. We’re actually creating a lot of opportunities.†Michael Pittman took a pass from Geovane Preciado and scored his sixth goal of the season to snap a scoreless tie 20 minutes into the second half. The Wildcats knotted the game with a goal with four minutes remaining. “We probably possessed the ball for 70 (of the game’s 80) minutes,†Richter said. “We stayed down in front of their goal, but they got a breakaway and scored.†The Rangers face off with their crosstown rival Lee Tuesday night at Stallworth. Kingwood girls 17, Lee 0 The Kingwood girls were who Lee thought they were as they rolled to a 17-0 win at home.
