Since bringing back SELA in 2003, how many times have we had dual participants from the SLC in the playoffs? I can think of only once, 2005, when TSU@SM and Nicholls St. made it only because they were co-champions. Then look at the discrepancy of "student fees"! $8.75 a CREDIT HOUR! PLEASE!!! If that is dedicated solely to football, with an average student taking 15 credit hours and only looking at Spring and Fall semesters only and assuming 8000 full-time students enrolled. THAT AMOUNTS TO $2.1 MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR FOR FOOTBALL!! - DAMN! That is more than the State of Louisiana (ULS) allows for entire athletic budgets. And to make matters worse the state of Louisiana, "limits" student fees for athletics and athletic improvements. I don't want to even go into coaches pay (LA vs TX) because it is just too damn embarrassing. So, it would not be long before "parity" would soon exist and McNeese would be passed in football. There is also an economic rule I like to call "opportunity feeding". If you have a certain amount of cattle that feed, stay healthy, and produce healthy offspring while "grazing" in a "limited pasture of grass", they will continue to stay as such as long as equilibrium is met. If the rancher (SLC) starts getting greedy by wanting to increase the amount of cattle he grazes (more football members) in the exact same pasture (future recruits), he will eventually KILL the HERD (SLC Football). The SLC is not the SEC with big bucks, but adding new members will kill our future prowess on the national scene. I am convinced. And, the only schools that will suffer will be Louisiana schools because of lack of equanimity with our Texas brethren. They may not be equal with us now on the playing field, but add more members and soon we will be spent out of existence!! People forget that when Lamar gave up football, that we were ALL 1-A with the same amount of scholarships. Soon we will have too many schools chasing limited scholarship players and the quality of football will go down. You want a good 1-A example today? Take a long look at the Sun Belt Conference that is trying to exist on limited budgets in the same major recruiting area as the SEC, Big East, and the ACC. They are a disaster.
Guest abovetherim Posted February 4, 2008 Report Posted February 4, 2008 BTW, I know of a man who I've been told would love the opportunity to coach at Lamar. No, I'm not talking Head Coach but a person with over 30 years of coaching experience. He has a lot of Louisiana contacts as he grew up in Sulphur and is a McNeese State alumnus. He would be a great defensive assistant!

He has the analogy wrong. The SLC isn't the rancher, each football school is a rancher. The SLC is like the law and is only being fair by allowing more ranchers to particpate in the business. If a rancher isn't smart enough or creative enough to expand their own pasture and create a better herd then maybe they need to step aside and let more capable ranchers do the ranching.

Just after LU dropped football, Mcneese began to win on a regular basis. Hell, I would go as far to say that is when the Mcneese dynasty began. YOU JUST DON'T GIVE UP... HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN McNeese's 1976, 1979, and 1980 SLC championships when we were I-A and our three Independance Bowl apperances? We were a top 25 team in I-A in 1980. About 5 McNeese players were drafted by the NFL that year. Yes, we dipped a bit in the late 80's AFTER the price of oil dropped to $6 a barrel and the state of Louisiana cut our budget in half, while at the same time we went on a bad coaching hiring spree. BUT, we always packed the house, while Lamar's team was still losing to us in our down years. The SLC consisted of: McNeese LaTech, Arkansas St. UL-Lafayette UL-Monroe North Texas That was a difficult conference and it is where those teams should have stayed, because they lost support and good players when they left the SLC. McNeese, LaTech, and Ark. State all took turns winning the championship, and we were always at or near the top.. Lamar was always at the BOTTOM. And many of our players came from the triangle then. PLUS, what do you think the Triangle recruits will say when they see 11000 McNeese fans take over Lamars stadium and whatch our team crush a bunch of JV players in their first couple of years of existence. And when you see the recruits we bring in tomorrow, it will show that the next 5 years will be very bright for the Cowboys. _________________ McNeese University - 12 Time SLC Champions Winner of 5 of the last 7 Championships! 76, 79, 80, 91, 93, 95, 97, 01, 02, 03, 06, 07... 3 Indy Bowl appearances (76, 79, 80) & 24 Playoff Games Current SLC schools only have 11 SLC Championships COMBINED.

This man just doesn't get it. I have never stated McNeese State wasn't good while Lamar played football in the SLC. I haven't read on any board where a Lamar University fan/supporter/alumnus stated differently. The fact is they were good, they had a better record than Lamar did just about every season. What I've stated is they were not a national power on the FCS (formerly I-AA) football level. Yes, they has a few very good years but they didn't not go to a I-AA national semifinal or I-AA final until after Lamar dropped their program and they were able to raid the SE Texas area for recuits. The coach my brother was a assistant under is a McNeese alumnus. My brother played a year at McNeese and I have several friends who are McNeese alumnus. Some are former football players others are just guys or gals who were regular students and they all state the same thing. McNeese State became a national I-AA power the day Lamar quit playing football. Now, obviously this guy feels different than everyone I know who attended, played, coached or did both at McNeese State. I too look forward to see how our impact on McNeese State will be in the coming years. But more importantly how it impacts all the SLC schools playing football. I know Lamar is committed to putting major money into the program. Within 5 years of joining the SLC Lamar will have a football budget larger than any Louisiana member school and that is a fact. I believe I posted the information within the past few days. If this man thinks Lamar will be putting out the same type of program they did back in the 80's he is in for a rude awakening. If the majority of SLC football schools aren't worried about the impact of Lamar football on their program why am I reading statements on other sites on a daily basis? The fact is the TSUS hasn't even voted yet on the okay to start the student fee and give the administration the go ahead to start a national search for a football coach and make renovations to Cardinal Stadium.
