Pair Of Cardinals Earn Athlete Of The Week Honors

FRISCO, Texas – Southland Conference indoor track teams made an impact in their respective events this past weekend, winning multiple events and setting a few records in the process.

For the men, sophomore Francis Kasagule repeated as the men’s Athlete of the Week with his performace at the Houston Indoor Invitational.

The Lamar standout set a new school record in the mile with a 4:07.23 – a full nine seconds ahead of the second place finisher. He also edged his previous best of 4:07.2.7 which he ran last year.

On the women’s side, fellow Cardinal Clerc Koenck won her second Athlete of the Week honor so far this season with her effort in the mile run at the Houston Indoor Invitational.

Koenck set a new Lamar University and Southland Conference record in the mile run with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:47.77, almost one second better than the prior record of 4:48.70 run by Ruth Waller of McNeese State in 2004. The 4:47.77 is 16 seconds faster than the second-best performance in the conference this season.

Honorable mention winners for the men were Travis Matthews (Freshman, Sam Houston State), Matt Langdon (Sophomore, Stephen F. Austin) and Kalphys Kemboi (Sophomore, Southeastern Louisiana). For the women, Natalia Clark (Senior, Sam Houston State), Trecey Rew (Sophomore, Northwestern State), Kim Carriere (Sophomore, Northwestern State) and Aimee Jonas (Freshman, UTSA) were recognized.
