Guest abovetherim Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 Senior pitcher Brian Sisk was named to the preseason All-SLC First Team Lamar Baseball Picked To Win SLC East Division Feb. 8, 2008 FRISCO, Texas - The Lamar University baseball team was picked to win the 2008 Southland Conference's Eastern Division according to the preseason poll released by the league office on Friday. The Cardinals were chosen ahead of Southeastern Louisiana by seven of 11 possible coaches - as each coach could not vote for their own team - and were awarded 62 points compared to 58 for the Lions. Northwestern State was selected third, followed by McNeese State, Central Arkansas and Nicholls State. The poll was a mirror image among the league's sports information directors, with nine first-place votes going to Lamar and three to Southeastern. In the west division, UTSA, Sam Houston and Texas State all received first-place votes in both polls with the Roadrunners grabbing eight from the coaches and 10 from the SIDs. Stephen F. Austin was picked fourth in both polls as UT-Arlington and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi alternated fifth and sixth in each poll. Among the preseason all-conference honorees, Lamar's lone representative was returning pitcher Brian Sisk on the first team. A senior from Henderson, Texas, Sisk tied for the SLC lead with 11 wins last year to go along with his 3.75 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 100.2 innings pitched. Senior relief pitcher Tim Erickson and junior designated hitter Chris Dunkin, a transfer from Alvin JC, were placed on the honorable mention list at their respective positions. Erickson, a senior from Sour Lake, posted seven saves and a 3-3 record for the Cardinals last season. Dunkin hit .371 with five home runs and 38 runs batted in for AJC in 2007. Lamar welcomes back 12 letterwinners including five pitchers from last year's team that went 34-25 and won the East Division with a 20-10 mark - after being picked second in the preseason. The Cardinals open their 2008 season in Edinburg, Texas, against A&M-Corpus Christi in the Al Ogletree Classic on Friday, Feb. 22.
lu cards Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 im really surprised were picked to win the east.we lost a lot from last year.i heard we had a great recruiting class but gilligan keeps things real quiet.once his radio show starts you find out a lot about the new players.
JMay Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 I'll take SHSU to take the title. Former Aggie Coach Johnson should have the ground work set there this year, but hopefully the SLC can be a multiple bid league this year. The Cards lost a lot of firepower in the line-up, hopefully they can replace it.
Guest abovetherim Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 Yep, they are going to be good. I hear LU is about to start construction on a new all-weather indoor hitting and pitching facility with turf along with a video and weight room. Then LU has the okay from the TSUS to renovate Vincent-Beck to the tune of $5 million dollars and $960,000 for field turf. The infield was just recently completed. After these upgrades, Lamar will again have the recruiting advantages over all their SLC foes.
Guest coachacola Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 The board of regents approved the upgrades to Vincent-Beck for the year 2013, 5 years from now!! Hopefully that can push that up and get it done sooner.
Guest abovetherim Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 Thanks coacacola, I didn't remember the years the TSUS approved the upgrades. I'm sure BT will push to have that moved forward.
