Guest DickVitale Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Having been apart and coached in BOTH, I must say that the basketball in the Golden Triangle, NOW, is MUCH better than in Houston...It has not ALWAYS been that way, but, there are a lot of factors as to why that is the case now. Main reason is that all of the Houston talent is so spread out across the city, which is why programs such as Kingwood are flourishing, because they are keeping their kids together from little dribblers. Also inner city coaching has taken a nose dive. There is much more coaching going on in Beaumont and surrounding areas. When you play GT area teams, you had better come with a game plan, not just hoping to outscore them, as is done in Houston...Sorry, BLUEDOVE, just facts...

I agree about the talent being so spread out across the city of Houston. And I've often wondered why the quality of coaching seems to have not improved. I get to see a lot of basketball all across Texas, mostly from Little Dribblers , YMCA to 17u AAU basketball. I've seen a few high school games and college games. The biggest difference that I have noticed (excluding hs & college), is that these coaches are not teaching the kids basic fundamentals of basketball. Too much dribbling, forced shots, not passing to an open man, not knowing when to give up the pass on the fast break, not knowing WHO to give the ball to in certain situations, etc, etc, bah-hhh! I do have to give it to Boutee, he is a very good old school coach.
Guest DickVitale Posted February 13, 2008 Report Posted February 13, 2008 And WHO is the most fundamentally sound team in the entire Houston area? KINGWOOD, by 10 miles! Furr is going to make the playoffs this year in that HISD district because they have the best coach in that district in Daryl Glenn..Yes, FURR...Waltrip's coach and my good buddy Dan Kelly does a great job as well, and they are also in the hunt in the other HISD 4A district. Both of these guys take NOTHING and compete every year against teams which MUCH more talent and less going on in the coaching box!! More FACTS, BLUE!
