The UIL basketball playoffs tip off tonight for one area team.

Barbers Hill’s girls, second-place finishers in District 21-4A, take on third-place 22-4A finisher Dayton in a 7:30 p.m. bi-district playoff at Lee College’s Sports Complex.

The Lady Eagles, led by sharp-shooting guard Keely Rivera and post player Shannon Mudd, are 24-7 overall, while Dayton comes in with a season mark of 22-8.

Barbers Hill went 12-2 in league play, losing only to 21-4A champ C.E. King.

Dayton had to scramble for its spot in the playoffs, handing 22-4A champ Beaumont Central its only league loss (60-57) Feb. 1 to breakaway from a pack of teams battling for third place.

Kaleigh Landry sank a 3-pointer with seven seconds left as Dayton knocked off the Central girls, who were ranked No. 15 in the state in the final regular season poll put together by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Coach John Chancellor’s Lady Eagles advanced all the way to the third round of the 4A playoffs a year ago before losing to eventual state runnerup Dickinson.

Both Baytown Sterling and Crosby will play bi-district games Tuesday night.

Crosby, 17-16 and the third-place 21-4A finisher, takes on Beaumont Ozen, the No. 16-ranked team in the state, at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lee College.

The winner of that game will play Dickinson, the District 23-4A champ in an area game this weekend.

Sterling, which scrambled to earn the fourth and final playoff berth in District 21-5A, faces 22-5A champion North Shore Tuesday night at Phillips Fieldhouse in Pasadena.

Another big area game Tuesday involves the Baytown Sterling boys, who must beat Port Arthur Memorial in a home game and have Kingwood beat Atascocita to create a three-way tie for the final 21-5A boys’ playoff berth.

If that happens, according to Goose Creek athletic director Tom Ed Gooden, a two-day tournament would take place Friday and Saturday to determine the playoff team.
