Boys basketball: Davis hoopsters on verge of playoff berth

• What: Davis vs. Washington

• When: 7 p.m. Wednesday

• Where: Delmar Field House

Davis boys basketball coach Matt Johnson says his Panthers have altered their approach this season.

After struggling early on, Davis' slogan was "One and Done." Thanks to a recent five-game winning streak, the Panthers have switched it to "One and In."

It might be a self-fulfilling prophesy for Davis. The Panthers (13-15, 6-5) only need a victory over Washington (7 p.m. Wednesday, Delmar Field House) to lock up at least a spot in a third-place district playoff against either Waltrip or Reagan.

"We're really close to getting in," Johnson said. "Only one more win."

Should Davis survive a district playoff, District 19-4A runner-up Jones awaits in a Class 4A-Region III bi-district game next week.

Davis kept its postseason hopes alive with a 62-56 victory over Waltrip. Starting center Ishmail Hayes notched 13 points, while guards Scotty Steel and Tim Burroughs added 11 and 10, respectively.

A few nights later, Davis' streak ended at the hands of nationally ranked Yates, which crushed the Panthers 100-44. Forward Chris Pruitt was the only player in double figures with 13 points.

Johnson attributed Davis' late-season surge to the outside shooting of Steel, who has opened things up for Hayes and Pruitt in the middle.

"Scotty has been averaging three 3-pointers per game the last couple of weeks," Johnson said. "When he's hitting from the perimeter, it allows our big guys to be more aggressive." Burroughs and Jerrell Jackson have been consistent performers in the backcourt. All five players are averaging 10 or more points, led by Burroughs and Pruitt with 16 each.

Davis hopes to join District 20-4A champion Yates and runner-up Sharpstown in the playoff field. The three teams from District 19-4A are, in order, Wheatley, Jones and Furr.

You rang, Coop?  Washington is struggling this season, but I think that pride will kick in and they will proceed to bounce Davis OUT of the playoff picture...That district is PITIFUL, Coop....Just awful!
