Big-time scoreboard ready to go for Bulldog Relays

The Port Arthur News

NEDERLAND -- Those opening-day track and field performances at the 44th annual Nederland Bulldog Relays may not be quite as impressive as the scoreboard which may display them.

That's because the Scoreboard and Finish Lynx Package at the southwest corner of Bulldog Stadium makes its public debut at today's meeting -- weather permitting -- and it ought to be in a league of its own for outdoor high school track and field in southeast Texas.

"The scoreboard package is without equal outside of Mike Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin (site of the annual University Interscholastic League state meet)," long-time area track observer and Bulldog Relays public address announcer George Hawkins said.

Besides the big scoreboard, this Bulldog Relays has other big things in mind, too.

The biggest field in the meet's history is expected to converge on the Central Middle School area by shortly after noon. There's 18 varsity boys teams, 18 varsity girls teams and a junior varsity division.

All eight District 22-4A schools will enter this meet. Four District 21-3A squads will be there. The two 21-5A Golden Triangle entries -- Port Arthur Memorial and Beaumont West Brook -- will be in the field along with Beaumont Kelly. The long-distance entrants will hail from Pasadena South Houston and Barbers Hill.

Besides the big field, Nederland meet officials obviously are big-time concerned about a potential big weather problem. Big-time rainfall quantities are in the forecast for this weekend. The concern about weather issues already has influenced the soccer coaches to move up the Nederland/Port Neches-Groves Mid-County Madness soccer affairs by two hours.

"We will have to shut it down at the first sign of any bad weather, but we certainly hope we are able to get the meet completed," Nederland athletic coordinator Larry Neumann said.

Most noteworthy of this area's returnees from the 2007 season would be Beaumont Ozen junior A'Lexus Brannon, the defending state 4A girls long-jump champion. Besides taking the gold medal in Austin at 19-5.5 in that event, Brannon also placed fourth at state in the triple jump and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles.

The agenda starts with the first set of field events at noon, followed by the second set at 1:45 p.m. The girls 3,200-meter run begins at 3:15 followed by the boys 3,200-meter run. The running finals schedule opens at 4:15 p.m., but it promises to be a lengthy one with three different divisions -- JV boys, varsity girls and varsity boys -- and multiple heats in many events.
