Lady Bobcats hope to trap Navasota

Gabe Pruett

The Orange Leader

HUMBLE — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats breezed through the area round last week.

It is hard to imagine it will be that easy again at 7 p.m. at Atascocita High School tonight as the Lady Bobcats face the Navasota Lady Rattlers in the Class 3A Region III Regional Quarterfinals.

A win tonight would clinch Orangefield's third consecutive trip to the regional tournament held at Sam Houston University in Huntsville this weekend.

Navasota is fresh off a 71-53 victory over Silsbee Friday night even with the Lady Tigers' Ang Green scoring 30 points.

Orangefield brushed off LaGrange 65-39 Friday night with senior Kaylin Little busting out for 36 points.

Now Orangefield Coach Chris Jost and the Lady Bobcats will use the experience of going 13-1 in District 21-3A as a guide on how to take now the state's No. 5 ranked team.

"Navasota has not lost since a Christmas tournament," Jost said. "So we are probably going to be the best team they have seen since then. The 21-3A race being so tough has prepared us for this kind of game. The girls are certainly ready for the challenge."

The Lady Bobcats only lost once in 21-3A and it was the last game of the district schedule at Hardin-Jefferson when Orangefield had already wrapped up its first out-right district championship since 1992.

"If we continue to play the way we have played over the last six weeks, we will be in good shape," Jost said. "If we execute our offense and hit the boards with them, we will be in business."

Orangefield stormed out of the gates against LaGrange Friday with an 18-7 lead after the first period and then led 38-14 at the break.

Little was on fire in the first half with 24 points in the game's first 16 minutes.

Allie Beach had eight points and eight rebounds while Laura Riddick had six points and eight rebounds.

"It was good to come out and play well early," Jost said. "A few girls got some playoff experience and that was big for us."

Jost said Navasota poses a new threat as the Lady Rattlers are both a "big and fast" team who rebounds well and gets down the court in a hurry.

"They like to push the ball up the floor," Jost added. "Navasota likes to get the rebound and go. We have got to be on the boards. On defense they mainly play half-court, man-to-man and they are really good at it. If we can stay aggressive and run our offense, we will be in good shape."

    • That should tell everyone something pretty clearly. Does anyone really think BH is recruiting elementary kids, to get them to transfer in Jr. high? Seriously? Here is the "dirty little secret" about BH: Most people move to the district for a quality living environment to raise their young family, and benefit from the outstanding acedemics at BH. Even If all athlectics suddenly disappeared from BH, people would still want their kids in the district. If thats not enough to convince anyone, and BH really was determined to recruit, first step would be to have open enrollemnt. It is closed.        Yes, I get it, no one ever wants to give BH the benefit of the doubt on anything. Some of the accusations are beyond ridiculous though. This paranoia the BH critics are afflicted with is not just sad, its flat out laughable.
    • Opting is always an option. Are they considering any BC assistants? Highly qualified after that season they put up.
    • Be that as it may, only time will tell. Hide and watch. Don’t be surprised if the next HC hire uses his own recipe. That happens more than not historically. I am not arguing the point that Hooks & CT had a winning combination that could’ve been carried over. I’m saying that finding someone to do that is not going to be as easy as one might think. Tell me again why Saban’s replacement, who even has Saban’s assistance if he wants it, just lost another game to an unranked team and has taken the Tide out of playoff contention? Why wouldn’t he just follow the success of possibly the greatest college football coach ever lived?
    • We've acknowledged having 2 HOF coaches hasn't been like most other schools. So why everyone jumps to the conclusion it wouldn't work here is beyond my comprehension. I see it carry over with these other hires. Gilmer, Aledo, North Shore, Austin Westlake. Next man up that continues the system in place has instant success. Matter fact there was 2 rookie HC that won the state championship the same year we handed over the keys. Same book. Same recipe. Better ingredients.
