KFDM COOP Posted February 19, 2008 Report Posted February 19, 2008 Sterling sweeps Port Arthur From sports staff reports Baytown Sun Published February 20, 2008 Ricardo Cazeres scored a pair of goals to lead Sterling’s boys to a 5-0 win over Port Arthur Memorial in District 21-5A soccer action Tuesday night. The win squares the Rangers’ district record at 2-2-2. “It was probably the most complete game we played all year,â€coach Jim Richter said. “Our defense did a good job. Our goalies did a good job. “Overall, it was a successful mission. It puts us back in the hunt.†Eric Garcia, Angel Nunez and Geovane Preciado added single goals for Sterling. The Rangers host Kingwood Friday night. Sterling girls 10, Memorial 0 Shannon Allport hammered home three goals and teammate Paola Bear scored two more Tuesday night to help the Lady Rangers to a big win over visiting Port Arthur in a soccer game played at Stallworth Stadium. The Lady Rangers improved to 4-2 in District 21-5A, holding on to their third-place position as the district ends its first round of play Friday night. Amanda Denton, Morgan Hollingsworth, Iris Martinez, Erin Yzquierdo and Rachel Mescall added single goals for Sterling. The Lady Rangers travel to Kingwood Friday. Lee boys 3, Channelview 2 Benito Huerta came through for the Ganders in the final minute of play with a goal to clinch a 3-2 win over Channelview. Channelview overcame a 2-0 second half deficit only to see Huerta score with: 57 remaining in the game to secure three points in the district race. “We had to have this win,†Lee coach Cris Dippel said as the Ganders improved to 3-3 in District 21-5A. Lee scored three minutes into the game as Ulises Irias scored on a cross from Edgar Sanchez. The Ganders led 1-0 going into the half and extended to 2-0 on a Sanchez goal at the 56-minute mark. The Falcons got on the board with a penalty kick and then tied the game before Huerta hit the game-winner.
