KFDM COOP Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Rivera 21-4A’s offensive player of the year By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published February 21, 2008 Barbers Hill senior Keely Rivera hit double digits in rebounds and steals several times this season, but it was her ability on the offensive end that earned her District 21-4A Offensive Player of the Year. Rivera took over the primary scoring role for the Lady Eagles this season after sophomore Paris Carter went down with a season-ending knee injury and led the team in scoring. Barbers Hill finished second place in district with a 12-2 record and an appearance in the area round of the playoffs. Sonja Curry of 21-4A champion C.E. King was named coach of the year after leading the Lady Panthers to a perfect 14-0 district record and was joined in the superlative club by La’Tis Manning of C.E. King ,who was named district MVP. The league’s coaches voted Aly Saver of Forest Brook defensive player of the year and Diamond Webb of Forest Brook newcomer of the year. “I thought the district did an excellent job of trying to represent the talent,†Barbers Hill head coach John Chancellor said. “Somebody is always left off of the list, somebody is always disappointed, but the coaches really worked hard and I would like to congratulate everyone that got picked.†Barbers Hill senior Shannon Mudd and sophomore Jasmine Carter were each named to the all-district first team. Also named first team was senior LaQuisha Walker of Crosby. Walker led a rebuilt Lady Cougar team to a third-place finish in district and a bi-district appearance. Filling out the first team was B.J. Walker and Joisslyn Lumpkin Boozer of C.E. King, Lai Ana Gill and Bianca Harris of Smiley, Keia Strother and Lyndsey Thomas of New Caney and Alexis Jackson of Forest Brook. Senior Lauren Sadler and sophomore Jillian Coon of Barbers Hill were named to the second team, as was Crosby senior Cortney Bradley. Joining the area athletes on the second team were Maria Ruiz and Keiara Jackson of Galena Park, Rachel Mitchell of C.E. King and Andrea Arney and Shelbee Pier of Huffman. Juniors Britney Gibbs and Cirby Manchaca of Barbers Hill were named honorable mention. Seniors Nikki Mora and Rhadaya McAllister were named honorable mention for Crosby as were Lady Cougar juniors Amanda Navarro and Maci Bush.
