Guest abovetherim Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Regents Finance Committee Approves LU Football Fee Jennifer Heathcock February 21, 2008 - 9:37PM Regents with the Texas State University System met Thursday talk about an athletic fee that would help pay for the return of football to the Lamar University campus. Students approved the fee last month. They'd pay $8.75 per semester hour and $4.50 per hour in the summer. "We're still a couple of months away from a final decision," said LU Athletic Director Billy Tubbs. Lamar University administrators met with regents Thursday to discuss the fee. TSUS regents are holding their board meeting Thursday and Friday at the LU campus. They asked dollars and cents questions about the proposal. "I think we got a good, positive response today from the board," said LU President Dr. Jimmy Simmons. Regents wanted to know how much support there is for the return of football. They also asked about the need for private donations and a timetable for the return of football. "It was approved by the Finance Committee unanimously today, so that's good news for football fans," said attorney Michael Truncale, a TSUS regent from Beaumont. If everything falls into place, a team should be ready to take the field in 2010. The TSUS Board of Regents will vote Friday on the fee. If approved, the next steps including hiring an architect, getting approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and getting money from donors. Dr. Jimmy Simmons hopes to have a coach in place by August. http://www.kfdm.com/news/regents_24843___article.html/football_fee.html
