KFDM COOP Posted February 24, 2008 Report Posted February 24, 2008 Backe taken for X-rays after foot gets hit with ball Cooper says pitcher might be put on crutches as a precaution KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Astros righthander Brandon Backe, who was scheduled to start the Grapefruit League opener Thursday against the Cleveland Indians, was taken for X-rays today after he was hit in the foot during live batting practice Saturday. While addressing the media, manager Cecil Cooper wasn't exactly sure which foot Backe injured, but he thought it was Backe's right foot. Backe was unavailable for comment before the Astros began their workout this morning at Osceola County Stadium. "Just a bone on the side of his foot," Cooper said. "He was throwing live (batting practice) and got hit in the foot. He finished his throwing time. And then last night it got a little irritated last night. Today we're going to try to get him X-rays just to make sure everything's going OK. "As a matter of fact, he might be on crutches just as a precaution," Cooper said of Backe. "He was throwing live BP. It was a ball back to the middle and hit him in the foot. He didn't think about it a whole lot in the foot." Backe isn't expected to do much today. If he has to be scratched, lefthander Mark McLemore will likely start Thursday against the Indians because he already was scheduled to pitch in the following game.
