10 million bond will soon bring upgrades to East Chambers Independent School District

By DENNIS KUTAC , The Enterprise

The East Chambers Independent School District soon will be seeing construction and other renovation work on its campuses.

Voters approved both propositions of a $10 million bond issue in November to pay for that work.

Superintendent Scott Campell said all of the bonds have been issued, and the district is in the design development stage for several of the projects.

"We expect to begin work this spring on the football stadium, baseball lighting and auditorium renovation," he said. "We are on schedule and all of the projects should be completed within 2½ years."

Proposition 1, which required $6.5 million in expenditures, includes new classroom construction and renovation of the 1962 classroom building at the elementary campus. Other plans call for a covered play area behind the school on an existing pad, additional walkways, parking and HVAC projects.

At the intermediate and junior high campuses, renovations to the 1948 classroom building and the 1978 science building are planned. Also, there will be new bleachers in the 1978 junior high gym and additional walkways.

At East Chambers High School, renovations are planned on the 1957 senior wing and science lab, the auditorium and the main building.

The proposition also provides for the renovation and air conditioning of the 1957 high school gym; work on the football stadium complex, which will include new bleachers, concession stands and restrooms; and construction of a softball field and lighting for the baseball field.

General projects throughout the district include upgrades to security and energy control systems, paving bus area parking and roads and building a cover for school buses.

Proposition 2, which totaled $3.5 million, will cover construction of a new high school gymnasium.

In November, the board approved an architectural contract with Dale Rabe and Partners for the projects. The schematic designs were presented to trustees in December.

East Chambers ISD has grown about 25 percent since 1991, adding programs and services for its students. The tax rate has declined 43 cents since the 1998-99 school year, according to the district.
