SFA Loses By 20 In NIT!!!

Give me a break, I hate to break it to you but I think your not the only one that knows a little about sports on here. If your such an expert, I guess you missed your ESPN calling ;)

ESPN does appear on the resume, made my national radio debut on there... ;)

SHSU has been to the Div I semifinals once and Div I quarterfinals twice in football...we've had our share of success in football, albeit, not as consistent as the Pokes...

I'm going to have to do away with my XM radio now ;D I'm happy for SHSU in thier three years of dominance in D2 football. ::) Anyways good to hear that we have experts on here since everybody on the radio is. Welcome to SETX 8)

SHSU, dominance in Div II football? Since your so adamant about putting us in Division II, can I call Lamar a Division II program? Apparently, we share the same conference and you guys are going to begin playing football (and will probably stick around while) in our Division II league... :P

You do realize your ignorance is the same one that coaches are going to use to recruit against Lamar in football and you better believe, they're already doing it in basketball (which was actually a major reason they changed the name from I-AA to Division I Football Championship Subdivision and the champion to Division I national title -- people were using 'Div II' or 'Div I-AA' in other sports).

Your just adding fuel to the fire...

Hopefully, you will learn your lesson...I'm sure your future football coaches will be touting a Division I program in Beaumont. Perhaps you can get on board...

He will Texas Terror but you can draw more flies with honey than vinegar if you know what I mean. No one here doubts your knowledge of college football. Give our fan's a little time to catch on. After all the man may not have been born yet the last time Lamar University had a football team. If he was he probably was pretty young.

Calling a Division I program, "Division II" does not sit well with me, especially when the institution he is a fan of will also be playing at our level. Your buddy 'Scalp'em' pretty much called Lamar a "Division II program"...

That does not help your program if any member of your fan base thinks you are a Division II program and it does not help the coaches who are attempting to recruit against schools that do use Division II in reference to your institution...

I agree but we will fight that battle together. Like you just stated it doesn't help Lamar or other members of the SLC for our fan's to think we are playing DII.

I know you don't like it nor the symbol D1. I hate that one myself! Give us some time we'll catch on and I'm sure you and others including our new coach will educate our fans.

The last time I checked I'm just a fan and not a recruiter for LU, so it is what it is. They made your D1 FCS because the smaller colleges didn't feel important. Whatever, you know sports and that's good for you, but that's why we have a board to discuss things. I still call it D2, so there you have it.

Message to any potential Lamar recruits (and their parents)...

According to Scalp'em...you will be playing Division II football. In turn, let us all proclaim Lamar as a Division II school across the board.

Coaches from other schools -- feel free to recruit against Lamar, saying that they are not a Division I school.

So says Scalp'em, so it's gotta be valid!

You may think I'm being a jerk, but there are people out there, both recruits and their parents, that will hear from recruiters that FCS (formerly I-AA) schools are Division II and will negatively recruit against your program in all sports. These recruits and their parents will not necessarily always know any better. If Scalp'em has that attitude and recruits/parents read this board, which they do -- it does nothing to help your program.

Just curious and then I won't comment anymore, but how many athletes have opted to play for a D2 school and start instead of going to D1 school and maybe getting to start thier senior year?  Ex. Dustin Long from PNG went to A&M, seen he was getting beat out and went to your alma mater, I believe that Josh McCowan did the same thing. LU will never get the top tier recruits as much as I want them to, but reality is reality. You have to hope that top tier kids want to transfer because of playing time or decide out of HS that they choose LU for playing time over a top tier team to get great recruits. Of course this is an assessment from a fan and not a ESPN radio personality ;)

Can't recruit on the town is great for college kids, can't recruit on the scenery of the campus area although they worked wonders, but you still have falling down houses and plants, hard to recruit great overall sports program, coaches are a plus, stadium is falling down unless vast improvements, academics are good, lack of pro athletes coming out of LU. Out of all of this what I'm saying is the strongest recruiting tool is PLAYING time, therefore you have to hope for JC transfer or a D1 kid wanting more playing time, possibly one or two hometown boys.

Should be noted that the transfer rules have changed slightly...an FBS player needs to have two years of eligibility remaining in order to transfer outside of an NCAA waiver (see Bobby Reid with one year left moving to Texas Southern). SHSU has landed some great transfer QBs over the years, though we have had some busts as well. SHSU, among other schools, have made some nice runs on the back of transfers, but then you have teams like AppSt who routinely find the "diamonds in the rough" and  "beat out" FBS schools all the time...

Terror your problem is SHSU has never been near the top and the Southland you know is the lowly Southland of today.

Many of us knew the Southland when it was a standing side by side with the SEC and Big 10. I remember Southland teams going to bowls,

La Tech mens BB ranked #8, Lamar ranked #18, sweet 16's, blowing out SEC teams instead of them blowing us out like todays reality.

Once you had a taste of that, you want more. Terror SHSU never tasted that before. Just being DI is enough for you. Lamar fans can never go

back to the sweet innocent virgin state SHSU is in.

I knew there was a reason why LU fans felt so strong about their teams. I remember liking this cheerleader in high school. I was only able to go so far (but so close) with her. It made me think I always had a chance with her, but it never happened. It took me awhile before I moved on. So maybe Lamar should go into the SWAC. LU would dominate basketball but not football.

I do not recall a time in the last 10 years where the SWAC was above the SLC in terms of football. Even in McNeese's lean years, they knocked off the "Black College National Champions" (just as mythical as the BCS title) from Southern...Nicholls and SLU even took SWAC squads to task...

You must have low expectations of your Lamar FB program...

I have low expectations for the program for the first 3 years. After that, there are no more excuses.

What are you doing on this board?  Are you just trying to stir up crap.  We all know that, academically speaking,  SHSU is a junior college compared to LU.  Ditto for athletics with the exception of football.  Also, just because you've had a few good years in basketball don't go getting the big head.  Talk to me when you've made the sweet 16.  And your baseball program can't carry our programs jock.  Golf?  Third in the NATION!!!  Case closed.  Go back to your SHSU board or to your fantasy land 'ESPN' (like I believe that line of crap) job.

By the way, I can put that I walked on the moon on my resume..doesn't mean it's true.

Not according to your Board of Regents. In fact, their tier system has SHSU over Texas State-San Marcos. Lamar is sitting in third. A lot of that has got to do with post-graduate studies, but SHSU has continued to increase academic standards and somehow at the same time is the fastest growing institution in the state. Must mean something...

Golf, you have our number (though we do have the last women's title). Basketball, we have been the better team over Lamar over the last stretch of years. No Sweet 16, but when did Lamar do that as of late? Baseball, our program is turning the corner. We have the nice facility now ("The Don") and were regional finalists last year in the Ole Miss Region. Lots of young players this year, already have one win over the Cards. Our program is definitely on the upswing right now. We'll see how the next few years play out as our players grow...

And yes, I did make an appearance on ESPN Gameday during the 2003 SLC championship game, supplying reports from court-side. I've also done game day work for Fox Sports Southwest, College Sports Television (CSTV) and CBS (during Houston Texans games)...

By the way, I can put that I walked on the moon on my resume..doesn't mean it's true.

I'm about to leave for school but just one fact. Lamar had just of over 16% enrollment increase from spring 2007 to this semester. Again, it depends on your major what institution of higher education is best in the TSUS.

I think SHSU being close to A&M helps some and north of Houston with their enrollment numbers.

If you are going to state the TSUS list Lamar third please provide a link or something. I can make a lot of statements but if I can't provide facts, why think they are factual?

If you can provide a link or an article stating your position about the TSUS and their "ranking" on institutions I'll gladly concur. Otherwise, I think this is a bunch of crap!

I tell my wife she is the most beautiful woman in the world, doesn't mean she is.  ;)

I will have to request it from the system office. This information comes to me from the Student Body President of SHSU who also doubles as the TSUS Student Advisory Board chair.

In 2005, the following evaluation of the Texas State University System was put out by the SHSU Student Government in response to discussions made by the Texas State University System pertaining to a flagship institution. Lamar was never included in said discussions, never event brought up. The below document stated why SHSU was closer to joining that of second tier institutions in the state ahead of Texas State - San Marcos on the grand scale and was in a better situation to be a flagship.

This is the hidden content, please

Not sure Lamar has made too many changes that would push them ahead of the two other TSUS institutions, especially considering your institution has been in a state of recovery from Rita. Your enrollment was in fact the largest growth percentage-wise last year in the state, but it was considered by many to be "recovery" instead of "growth"...

Are you trying to say if you issue a lot of degrees that makes you a good university?  So a small university like Rice wouldn't be any good in your analysis?  And if you have a high graduation rate that makes your university elite/top notch?

That shows how far the conference needs to go.

I really don't get your point.  I don't think a 20 point loss at UMass really indicates anything about the conference.  The A-10 was strong this year and UMass had been playing extremely well.  To go on the road and win in college basketball is EXTREMELY difficult.

    • Like I said, even if it’s only 10% of the 100 kids BHISD takes from GCCISD each year, that’s 10 athletes per year and that’s being generous.  You’re right about the jobs with BHISD, BTW.  There’s more than 1 athlete from Baytown originally who got transferred to BHISD after a job opened up for Mama.

    • It’s behind a paywall but here’s Baytown Sun’s story on it.  It was reported on in other papers statewide so if you search by the date I think you’ll find other stories on it. UIL strengthens student transfer rules By Ron McDowell [email protected] Oct 18, 2024   In order to maintain a level playing field for all member schools, the University Interscholastic League strengthened rules regarding transfer student eligibility at its most recent meeting in Austin. Every year thousands of students transfer schools in the state of Texas. A student’s ability to participate in UIL sanctioned activities may be limited base on the reasons for the transfer. A change in family status, work transfers, enrollment in an academic magnet program, or a move across town, receive scrutiny, but only rarely does one of these reasons result in the loss of eligibility. The only reason to automatically cause the loss of participation eligibility is a transfer for athletic purposes. The current rule, which has been in place since 1981, does not require a Previous Athletic Participation Form (PAPFs) to be submitted if the student-athlete does not participate in a varsity level sport during the first year of enrollment. There has been growing concern among some member schools, that other members are breaking the current rule and creating “super teams” with new transfer enrollees, and that the UIL is not doing enough to police, what appear to be, the inordinate number of transfers among high school athletes. To mitigate these concerns, the UIL approved a proposal to expand the power of the State Executive Committee (SEC) and allow it to investigate schools based upon the number of PAPFs submitted. Schools that submit an inordinate number of PAPFs would face heightened scrutiny and possible public reprimand and future sanctions. The UIL has also changed the requirements for PAPF submission, mandating that the form be submitted before a grade 9-12 transfer student may participate at any level of school athletics. This is a marked departure from the current policy which encourages schools not to complete PAPFs for students who transfer in, if the school believes that the student will not play a varsity sport in the first year the student is enrolled at the new school. Some critics of the current system think that the change doesn’t go far enough. Speaking on background, one local school district source suggested that there should be an automatic year wait for transfer students due to the number of loopholes in the waiver process. “If a student transfers, it should be a year out of competition automatically,” the source said. In addition, the UIL also approved a proposal that gives the SEC the power to appoint an independent administrator to oversee the conduct of the local District Executive Committee (DEC) if it is determined that the DEC is not consistently enforcing the rules of the governing body. The change is significant since all appeals that a school brings, starts and usually ends with the DEC. That includes the determination of transfer student eligibility. It is believed that with the implementation of this change, schools in a UIL district will be less likely to face retribution from the DEC chair and other members. The policy changes will go into effect, Aug. 1, 2025 This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up
