Guest roberthollister Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 South Florida's first football game was against Kentucky Wesleyan and they lost, 80-3. It's going to take time. But why couldn't Lamar become the next South Florida? Granted, USF has an enrollment of 32,000 students. With time, Lamar's enrollment will increase incrementally in the next several years. This topic is open for debate......

This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up In fact, all their wins came against non-scholarship Division I (those do exist) or sub-Div I football teams that year...as Charleston Southern was not Div I just yet... Would be a good story if they did lose 80-3...
Guest abovetherim Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 We need about 5,000 more like you roberthollister!
TexasTerror Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 From the USF Media Guide...should be noted they had 49k at their first game! Very nice! And maintained a good 30k+ at each game except a home win over Chuck South...wow, road trip to Cumberland! Date Opponent Site Result Attend. Guest abovetherim Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Dang, that was a weak schedule and they still had a losing record. What 5-6? I think we'll play a harder schedule the first year but nothing like a full SLC schedule. Definitely not the top tier teams of the SLC. They have really done things the right way. Plus, to compete for athletes with Miami, Florida, Florida State and Florida Atlantic is just mind blowing to me.
Guest roberthollister Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 My reference was the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia. Perhaps I was wrong. I don't think that I'll slit my wrists over it......lol
Guest abovetherim Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 :D Don't do that as someone like me will be meeting you at the ER. :D
TexasTerror Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Dang, that was a weak schedule and they still had a losing record. What 6-5? I think we'll play a harder schedule the first year but nothing like a full SLC schedule. Definitely not the top tier teams of the SLC. SLU played a schedule that I think will be more like what you play. SLU played three SLC teams (San Marcos,McNeese, SHSU). Two SWAC squads (Alcorn, Valley), a transitional program (Northern Colorado), a young FCS program (Gardner Webb), a non-scholly Div I (Jacksonville) and the rest (UAM, Texas College and Mercyhurst) as sub-Div I. 2004 Hal Mumme (7-4) Date Opponent Result Score Site Att. 9/2 Arkansas-Monticello W 46-32 H 9,078 9/11 #6 McNeese State W 51-17 A 16,499 9/18 Texas State L 2ot 31-28 A 13,114 9/25 #24 Sam Houston State L 45-17 H 9,480 10/2 Mississippi Valley State W 33-17 H 9,021 10/9 Northern Colorado W 26-13 H-HC 8,322 10/16 Mercyhurst W 58-14 H 8,517 10/30 Alcorn State L 33-27 H 9,137 11/6 Jacksonville W 51-3 A 2,162 11/11 Texas College W 54-14 H 7,768 11/20 Gardner-Webb L 52-34 A 3,841 Ideal Year #1 Lamar Schedule, based off of what we see from SLU 2-3 SLC squads (not going to be an easy task by any means) 2 SWAC schools (very winnable ones at that, i.e UAPB, Valley) 1 or 2 new FCS programs (South Alabama perhaps? similar situation) 2 non-scholarship Div I (i.e Jacksonville, Dayton, Drake, etc) 3 sub-Div I regional schools (i.e Texas College, Belhaven, Angelo St, etc) Lamar should IMO be able to get five or six wins with this slate...
Guest abovetherim Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Texas Terror I hope so but some of the people I deal with will "jump ship" after the first season if we don't have a winning season. You should read the crap I've read on some other board about Coach Tidwell not recruiting more local girls. Are you kidding me! I know UNT really likes Coach Tidwell. You think SHSU might be interested? Obviously we have about 10 people on here that are better judges of talent that the man hired to do the job. Then in less that 12 months the Lady Cardinals produce the first winning season since 1991. I am now convinced there is no humanly way possible to make everyone happy. Ask your buddy working for Lamar what he thinks about Coach Tidwell. He does all the lady games. I bet he has a few kind words to say about him even in private. Unfreaking believable!

I've heard great things about Tidwell from people without Lamar connections. I've done my fair share of women's basketball this year and seen quite a few SLC schools. North Texas had that HC in place for quite some time. I'd be very interested to see who they hire. The fans want the old HC from UT-Arlington. As it relates to football, you guys aren't going to win right off the bat unless you schedule a slate that is winnable. SLU was 7-4 because they scheduled right -- that upset over McNeese was nice, but they beat all the sub-Div I teams, won their non-scholly game and split with the SWAC...
Guest coachacola Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 There always seems to be this group of people who always complain about Lamar not recruiting enough local talent, no matter what sport we're talking about. I think that's part of the "high school" mentality a lot of people in SETX have. They don't really see Lamar as a "serious big-time" university, but just the local college, and as a result, they think Lamar should give all the local kids a scholarship. I hate that type of thinking. Bringing back football and trying to become the next South Florida is what Lamar should be trying to do. Will they succeed at that? Probably not, but that's better than just being the local college in a small-time conference that nobody really cares about. In Texas football is king and Lamar has to compete against UT and A&M, not necessarily on the field, but against them in SETX for fans and interest.
