KFDM COOP Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Cougars happy to be CBI host UH welcomes Valpo to Hofheinz for Monday game After surviving a tense opener on the road, the Houston Cougars will play the quarterfinals of the inaugural College Basketball Invitational tournament at home. The Cougars (23-9) will host Valparaiso Monday at Hofheinz Pavilion. Seeded No. 3 in the West Regional, the Cougars traveled to Nevada on Tuesday and defeated the No. 2-seeded Wolf Pack 80-79 in the first round of the inaugural tournament. Valparaiso, seeded fourth, upset top-seeded Washington 72-71 Wednesday night in Seattle, giving the Cougars homecourt advantage. University of Houston athletics director Dave Maggard jumped at the opportunity to play the game at Hofheinz Pavilion, despite the $60,000 fee that comes with hosting it. "The Nevada game was perhaps one of, if not the, best, game of the season for us, especially being on the road and the difficult travel schedule, arriving in Reno at 1 a.m. the morning of the game," Maggard said. "The excitement by our players is still very high and I know they will continue to give an all-out effort to advance to the next level. "The financial commitment to host is very significant. Our fans and alums want a first-rate program, so I feel certain they will come out to support this team Monday evening. I view this as another building block for the continuing development of our basketball program." The CBI semifinals, where the four teams will be re-seeded, will be played on March 26, with the best-of-three championship series starting on March 31. Fans can buy tickets to the game by calling 713-GO-COOGS or by visiting UHCougars.com and clicking the appropriate links. Reserved tickets are priced at $20 and general admission tickets for $15. UH and Valparaiso students with valid IDs can purchase a student ticket for only $5.
