DoctorSamson Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 Post what you think is a good ERA for a high school pitcher, and name any pitchers for whom you happen to know their ERA, and where they are from.
skills123 Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 under 2 is a good era and under 1 is really good .....you have to remember that these are highschool kids and the quality of a lineup isnt that good, they may have 2 or 3 above average guys hitting but after that its just average at best so if you cant pitch against that then your in trouble
Pirates345 Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 under 2 is a good era and under 1 is really good .....you have to remember that these are highschool kids and the quality of a lineup isnt that good, they may have 2 or 3 above average guys hitting but after that its just average at best so if you cant pitch against that then your in trouble ERA is statisticly over a period of nine innings so a decent ERA might be around 3 to 4 and a really good ERA would be 2 and under.
beaumontboy Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 Hard to say...2 or 3 is good era in high school but you have to take errors into consideration.
DoctorSamson Posted March 29, 2008 Author Report Posted March 29, 2008 errors have nothing to do with an ERA, which stand for Earned Run Average. Runs scored because of errors would be unearned, and would therefore not harm the ERA.
cardinal81o7 Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 in the regular season/ district below one is good, anything else is average, and if its above 3 they shouldnt be pitching regularly, its just my take and personal experience in watching guys like angelle stringer and just the lights out pitchers in the area having lines like .018 era or something crazy like that when you move into playoffs im sure its more common for those guys to creep into the 1-2 range simply because the level of competition rises. if those kind of pitchers have runs scored on them its usually because of the other team nickle and diming them w/ angelle bolton told me one time "if hes on....might as well bring a lawn chair to 2nd base"
midcountymadness Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 under 2 is a good era and under 1 is really good .....you have to remember that these are highschool kids and the quality of a lineup isnt that good, they may have 2 or 3 above average guys hitting but after that its just average at best so if you cant pitch against that then your in trouble ERA is statisticly over a period of nine innings so a decent ERA might be around 3 to 4 and a really good ERA would be 2 and under. High school ERA's are not statistically over a period of nine innings. They are based on how many earned runs a pitcher gives up on average in seven innings. A 3.x is fair. A 2.x is good A 1.x is great and a 0.x is as good as it gets.
643 Posted March 30, 2008 Report Posted March 30, 2008 (?? runs / ?? innings) x 9 = ?.?? I really would think it would be based on 9in, all college games are based on using 9in, even in a 7 inn game, also holds true in a run limit game which could be 5 or 6 inn.
DoctorSamson Posted March 30, 2008 Author Report Posted March 30, 2008 I agree with midcounty, because the definition of ERA is based on the number of innings in a regular season game, which for high school is 7. That of course changes afterward, but I think midcounty has a good distribution. I don't know that many kids in high school have under 2 ERA's. That being said, I think that coaches and scouts probably look at more all around game play than just an ERA statistic.
retiredoldcoach Posted March 30, 2008 Report Posted March 30, 2008 MCM is correct. High school earned run averages are an average of earned runs given up in seven innings. College and pro ERA's are based off of nine innings.
EAGLE07 Posted March 30, 2008 Report Posted March 30, 2008 MCM is correct. High school earned run averages are an average of earned runs given up in seven innings. College and pro ERA's are based off of nine innings. That is correct...7 innings. BH Thamm 1.17 Hales 1.44 Silva 1.80 ;D ;D ;D
DoctorSamson Posted March 30, 2008 Author Report Posted March 30, 2008 0.39 is impressive. How many games left in regular season play?
baseballmom2xs Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 If I am not mistaken, there are 8 games left in the season. Tuesday is the final a game of the first half. We start over on Friday.

643 Posted April 1, 2008 Report Posted April 1, 2008 I think ERA is overrated. Have you benn drinking the water from the papermills outflow water storage facility???
baseballmom2xs Posted April 1, 2008 Report Posted April 1, 2008 ERA's can be misleading if the lineups that are pitched against are weak. I can't say that in this district or others. ERA's are important.... As a pitcher, you have to have other skills to go along with throwing the ball because you have to be able to defend your area too.
EAGLE07 Posted April 1, 2008 Report Posted April 1, 2008 I think ERA is overrated. Have you benn drinking the water from the papermills outflow water storage facility??? No doubt. LOL
DoctorSamson Posted April 1, 2008 Author Report Posted April 1, 2008 everything is misleading if the batting lineup is weak. I think you are right though, a good ERA is truthful in this district ( I assume you are speaking of 22-4a).
