KFDM COOP Posted July 24, 2006 Report Posted July 24, 2006 Sticky Situation Gets George Steamed ... ON THIS DAY (July 24) July 24th in 1983 is a "Date that will live in Infamy" ....!!! ......This of course is the day that infamous Pine Tar Game" was played. After George Brett hit an apparent "home run" off of Rich Gossage in the ninth inning to give the Royals the lead, the umpire ruled after some strong "lobbying by Billy Martin" that the bat that Brett used "exceeded the 17 inches allowed in the rules". Brett was then called "out and went crazy"... Later on when the "tar settled" and the league prez Lee MacPhail ruled that the pine tar "did in fact ...exceed the rule, but that the "rule" needed to "rewritten and clarified" ....... Eventually the "homer" was allowed to stand and MacPhail said that the "pine tar did not effect whether or not the ball would have been a home run or not" ...........and that the homer would stand and the game will be resumed from that point on August 18th.
