Charges dropped against Coach Lucky Gamble

The Falls County district attorney’s office has declined to prosecute one of Texas’ all-time-winningest high school football coaches after his arrest last year on assault, drunken driving and weapons charges.

Falls County District Attorney Jody Gilliam Morris found there is insufficient evidence to file formal charges against former Chilton High School assistant football coach Lucky Gamble. Gamble, 56, was arrested twice one weekend last September in Marlin, which led to his resignation.

The assault arrest involved Gamble’s wife, who signed an affidavit in Gilliam Morris’ office saying she did not want her husband prosecuted, the district attorney said. However, that was not why the case was not pursued, she said.

“My policy is not to automatically dismiss a case just because they didn’t want prosecution. I decide it on the evidence that is presented to me.†Gilliam Morris said.

Gamble, who was coaching offensive and defensive lines at Chilton when he resigned, said he is relieved this episode in his life is closed.

“I am glad this is finally over, and I can get on with my life. I never felt I was guilty of the charges which were made,†Gamble said Wednesday. “I put it in God’s hands. That’s all I could do.â€

Gamble’s attorney, Hoagie Karels, said the misdemeanor weapons charge, which came when Gamble was stopped for suspicion of drunken driving, involved an ax handle that Gamble and his father use to unclog garbage disposals.

Gamble was convicted of misdemeanor assault and placed on probation in McLennan County in 2004 for an incident involving a previous wife.

He ranks 14th on Texas’ all-time win list with a 267-69-5 record over a three-decade career, including a 59-10 mark as head coach at Chilton from 2001 to 2005.

Gamble declined comment Wednesday about his plans other than to say he just wants to get on with his life.
