kicker
WEST ORANGE — Two-a-days are right around the corner for high school football players and to say that there are a few Mustangs chomping at the bit would be an understatement. The West Orange-Stark Mustangs can’t hardly wait to take flight Sept. 1 when they open the season at Dayton. Of course, the Mustangs have to be thrilled about their chances this season with seven starters back on both sides of the ball from a team that finished 13-1 last season, one that advanced all the way to the Class 3A Division I State Semifinals. “The kids can’t wait to get things rolling,†said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks, who will be entering his 26th season as the head man. “We’re really wanting to build off what we accomplished last year. August 7th can’t get here quick enough.†Of course, Aug. 7 is the first day of practice for those schools that didn’t have spring practice. One thing for certain, the Mustangs have certainly been busy this summer. The weight room has been constantly put to use and the 7-on-7 squad just returned from a state trip in which it reached the consolation semifinals. “We’ve had a great turnout all summer long,†explained Hooks. “The kids are getting so much stronger and have been up here going at it with a regular routine. Our offensive line returns intact and our defensive line is almost all back. Those big fellas are going to be in much better shape going into those first practices than they did last year. We also gained a lot of steam with our 7-on-7 success.†The Mustangs will scrimmage Barbers Hill and Vidor before their first official tussle with Dayton. “We like what we have with our two scrimmages,†said Hooks, who is a native of Mont Belvieu and was a solid athlete at Barbers Hill. “Barbers Hill is a scrappy bunch and they’re moving up to Class 4A. It’s too bad we never got to play each other on the 3A level. Vidor will be a good test for us because they have a lot of numbers.†The Mustangs have a tough non-district schedule in Dayton, Little Cypress-Mauriceville and Bay City, all 4A schools. “Dayton may be one of the toughest tests out there for anybody,†said Hooks. “They have a tremendous running back in that (Henry) Dugat kid, who is a 1,600 to 1,700-yard rusher. That will be a tough place to open things up at. Dayton has a tremendous facility and our fans will love it there. They’ve got that nice poly-turf field and big old stadium. LC-M will be a tough test at our place and it’s great to get that rivalry game going again. It’s something both communities can enjoy. Then there is Bay City, enough said.†Unlike other schools around the area, WO-S had very little coaching turnover during the summer. Derrick Rivers, who was an assistant baseball coach at Beaumont Central, took the head job at WO-S, replacing Chris Bean, who went to Port Neches-Groves to be an assistant. Todd Marburgh is no longer on the varsity football staff after electing to go to a private business. “Everything is pretty much in order here,†said Hooks. “Very little shakeup. Coach Rivers is going to be a good one. He’s so energetic and will be really good for the kids. He knows the game well and is an excellent addition to the staff.†The only thing that is progressing slowly at WO-S these days is the building of the new press box after Hurricane Rita obliterated the old one last year. “That’s coming along slowly,†said Hooks. “We’ll eventually have one, it’s just going to take a little longer than expected. We’ll do something to help the media and scouts out. We’ll probably have to throw up a tent to keep you guys out of the weather.†On a more positive note, the Mustangs will get to look at a brand new scoreboard and Mustang fans will have an opportunity to watch Kenneth Beasley, last season’s standout quarterback who passed for nearly 2,000 yards and rushed for nearly 1,500 yards while accounting for 46 touchdowns, in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game Aug. 1 at the University of Texas’ Memorial Stadium. Beasley is already attending the University of Texas as he took classes during the summer.
