KFDM COOP Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 Fort Worth Southwest coach suspended 1 year Fort Worth Southwest coach suspended 1 year STAR-TELEGRAM Fort Worth Southwest High School coach Scott Gray was suspended from all UIL activities for one year for violation of Section 1201 (a) (3) of the UIL constitution and contest rules, a result of decisions handed down by the State Executive Committee of the UIL on Friday. His suspension will go through the 2008-09 school year. The UIL decided to punish Fort Worth Southwest boys basketball coach Scott Gray for verbal abuse of an official after a game at the state tournament last month. Gray, who led the Raiders to the Class 4A state final, said in a post-game press conference that he wished the game could have been officiated by officials who are used to a fast pace “like Houston or Dallas or Fort Worth†and not someone “from Amarillo.†An Amarillo official was part of the crew for the 4A championship game, won 80-77 by Dallas South Oak Cliff. Southwest’s top player, Kendall Timmons, fouled out with 41 seconds left. Gray announced shortly before the playoffs began that he was stepping down as coach at Southwest. He said the UIL is telling him he broke a rule that requires him to accept the decision of officials without protest. “I guess that’s what they got me for, but I don’t know about verbal abuse,†Gray said. “I’ve never read anything that said I couldn’t say anything to the media about what I thought. I guess that’s because we usually don’t have media much, not like in college or the pros.†The hearing is at 9:50 a.m. at the UIL office in Austin and is open to the public.
shooter Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 Coop, Am I reading this correctly, that there is no appeal process. If this is the case it goes against demcratic principles. The coach stated that he couldn't protest the UIL's ruling. I hope this is not case, because if it is, the UIL has too much power and I just lost more faith in due process.
BLUEDOVE3 Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 I don't see any serious infractions based on what the article is reporting. Surely there is a "due process" clause somewhere in the process.
Guest DickVitale Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 Nope...The ALMIGHTY UIL has spoken!!! Thats a done deal...That guy should have taken the high road at the press conference...His kids had a great year, why ruin it at the end? Would criticizing the refs CHANGE the outcome of the game? NO...Would it provide an explanation as to WHY they lost? NO...1 year IS a bit much, but, hey you deal the deck, you play the hand....WHOA..I am starting to sound like my dad!!

Dickie, I've seen your dad go off on refs. It got so bad one time that the ref told him to stay in the "pit" @ (Delmar Stadium) and he better not come out or he gets a "tech." And thats the lighter version of several more incidents.

Maybe in the OLD, OLD days, but he was KNOWN for being calm under pressure...1 tech in 43 years of coaching, and that was for telling one of his players (Carl Johnson) to get his head out of his behind back in the 80's...Little did he know, that the REF'S name was also.....CARL JOHNSON...True story, and my dad's ONLY tech in 43 seasons!
setxbbfan Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 I am very similar to DV's dad. I had 43 techs in one season.
