kicker
Beasley a Mustang one more time Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Before Kenneth “Deon†Beasley straps it on for the “burnt orange†of The University of Texas, the 2006 West Orange-Stark graduate will represent his high school one final time when he lines up for the South All-Stars in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Football Game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 at Texas’ Memorial Stadium. The game will be aired live by Fox Sports Southwest. Beasley has been back in Orange, preparing for the game and was hanging around the Mustang Fieldhouse Monday, chatting it up with former teammates and the Mustang coaching staff. “It’ll be a great feeling to represent my high school that one final time,†said Beasley. “It will give me a final chance to show respect to some great coaches that have pushed me to be the best I could be. To top it off, I’ll get to play the All-Star game in the stadium I will play in for the next several years.†Beasley had a phenomenal senior campaign for WO-S, leading the Mustangs to a 13-1 mark and a trip to the Class 3A Division I State Semifinals from his quarterback slot. He had his hand on 47 touchdowns. He completed 116 0f 204 passes for 1,928 yards and had 23 TD tosses and just 11 interceptions. He rushed for 1,468 yards on 244 carries and scored 23 TDs and had a back-breaking 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the District 21-3A-clinching victory against Bridge City in the regular season finale. Along the way he picked up 21-3A MVP honors and All-Orange Leader MVP honors for the second consecutive year. He also earned Army All-American honors and participated in the Army All-American Bowl. Beasley had quite a nice stay in Austin this summer. He took some summer classes in the first summer session before concentrating on the upcoming All-Star game. He’s already bulked up quite a bit with a heavy workout schedule. “Texas wants me to bulk up some more, they want me to be around 190 pounds for sure,†said Beasley. “I got myself into a nice routine over the summer. We would work out about three times a day and we’re eating really good.†Beasley ate up opponents really good as a Mustang. As a junior, he spent a lot of quality time as a defensive back and receiver and spent a little time at defensive back as a senior, which was a good thing because the Longhorns like Beasley’s chances at cornerback. “I like the challenge of playing against people one-on-one,†said Beasley. “It’ll be a lot different at the next level because everyone is so big and fast. That’s why they’re really pushing me to get stronger.†Of course, there will be a big difference lining up against the Oklahoma’s compared to the Hardin-Jeffersons of the world. “It’s going to be a whole new ball game and it’s a challenge I’m definitely looking forward too,†said Beasley. “It’s what I’ve always dreamed about.†Long-time WO-S head coach Dan Hooks has always liked Beasley’s potential. “He just has amazing skills and he’s such a competitor,†said Hooks. “He’s going to give Texas a boost, you can count on it. I don’t know what all they’re feeding him in Austin, but he is looking really good. It’ll be a nice feeling seeing him represent West Orange-Stark at the All-Star Game for the last time. Every now and then, that special athlete comes through the program. We’ve had a handful here and Deon is certainly one of them.†Beasley will be just one of three Southeast Texans on the South team, which will be coached by George Harris, who is from Gregory-Portland. Joining Beasley will be fellow Texas recruit Robert Joseph, a defensive back from Port Arthur Memorial, and Toddrick Pendland, the elusive Newton Eagle running back who signed with McNeese State University. Larry Dippel, of Amarillo, will coach the North All-Stars. The THSCA All-Star Basketball Game will be held Monday, July 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center.
