KFDM COOP
Patriot coaching hires set for Monday By Dave Rogers Published April 10, 2008 Goose Creek Memorial head coach Bret Boyd says he and principal Al Richard will have nearly a complete slate of coaches to present to the school board at its meeting Monday. “I have a lot of names in place, about 90 percent of all of our coaches,†Boyd said. “There’s still a few we need some applications on, a few head coaches.†The coach, who was hired away from Killeen Ellison to be Memorial’s first head football coach/campus athletic coordinator, said he had settled on all but three of his head coaches for boys’ and girls’ sports. Two who haven’t been hired, he said, are head coaches for baseball and softball. The third head coaching job still up in the air is reported to be tennis. Several of those who will coach at the first-year school next year will be current district employees who are just transferring inside the district. Those who are already under contract to the Goose Creek district do not have to be voted on by the board members, but Boyd and principal Al Richard say they will do it anyway, as a courtesy. “It’s not like we have a big secret,†Boyd said. “But if you were on the school board, you wouldn’t want this coming out until you were told about them. “Everybody who has been transferred to or agreed to be hired at the new high school will be hired at that time (Monday).†The Patriot football coach said he has made job offers and handshake agreements with all but two of the men who will coach the school’s football team. “I still have a couple of positions I need to hire, but I’m conducting interviews every day,†Boyd said. He explained that he didn’t want to hire a baseball or softball coach until the end of the current seasons. Those are the only two sports who haven’t reached the end of district play for this school year. Boyd also reported that he had filled one of Memorial’s two open football dates that were created by the recent merger of Forest Brook and Smiley. He has booked Bellaire Episcopal as his team’s third opponent for the fall.
