Guest DickVitale Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 OK, here's the deal...Last week TSU hired Tony Harvey, former Missouri assistant coach, to be their head men's bb coach on last Friday. He has a well documented negative NCAA history, but that is in the past, and he is a well qualified candidate. When they brought Robert Moreland back in October to be interim coach, they made a "gentleman's agreement" with the AD, Alois Blackwell, and interim president that Kevin Granger, his assistant would be the head coach designate..Granger left his job as boys basketball coach at Worthing, BREAKING HIS CONTRACT, in OCTOBER to take the asst. position seemingly for a year. (Thus making him ineligible for re-hire into HISD) Blackwell is fired in March by the new president, and brand new football coach, Johnny Cole was tabbed Interim AD. He then notifies Granger that he would NOT be honoring the gentleman's agreement since none of the parties were there anymore, and there was nothing on paper...HE (Cole) hires Harvey on Friday...TODAY, TSU will name Charles McClelland from Prairie View as the NEW AD...Do you think that TSU was justified in allowing this to transpire? What should the NEW AD do? Forget about the OTHER TSU issues and just focus on this one for now....what do you think?
westend1 Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 I know nothing of this case, however, If Granger can break a written contract, he should darn well expect that TSU might break a handshake deal. Good for the goose, good for the gander.

You can't trust TSU with money no longer than you can trust a crack head with a key to your house. There is too many issues at that school to even trust them with a young persons education. I know when opportunity knocks there is a want to open the door, but it is best to only open that door if its not a robber dressed like a banker on the other side. TSU is very unstable and there is no way I take a HANDSHAKE agreement from them!
Guest DickVitale Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 That point is well taken guys, and I agree with you two as well...I DO feel for the guy because the year before he lost in the regional finals to Ozen with a lot of returning guys. He was in a pretty decent coaching situation..BUT..he left those kids hanging IN OCTOBER....Just before the first days of practice...Do you think there will be any recruiting retaliation from HISD coaches? My dad seems to think that this will happen to the new coach and that is unfortunate.
BLUEDOVE3 Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 I personally know a few people you mentioned in your thread and without trying to be too one-sided, I think Granger knew the situation at TSU but never took into consideration the gamble he would be taking. Especially with Blackwell being on the hot seat for so long. After the President was fired, Blackwell's days were limited as AD @ TSU. Granger should have at least tried to get something in writing at that time. For those of you not familiar with some names, Blackwell was a former running back with the Cowboys and K.C. Chiefs.

TSU is very unstable and there is no way I take a HANDSHAKE agreement from them! NO Short!! Thats why I said to FORGET about the PAST TSU mess ups...The INTERIM AD made this call...He was exercising his right, and strangely enough, I see his logic...Last August they fired Ronnie Courtney, former Willowridge coach who had JUST led his team to back to back 5A titles in 2000 and 2001...Why would you fire a high school guy with HIS credentials, only to hire another LESS qualified high school guy, with just TWO years experience as a head coach? They should have just call Ronnie Courtney back if they were going to hire Granger...Blackwell (former AD) was gone, which was Courtney's MAIN adversary..... Makes sense to me...

Retaliation in not sending their kids to TSU, encouraging other options..Yes I know that this would be a crazy thing to do, because they are only hurting kids potentially, but people can be something else you know....

Oh okay! Yeah I could see this happening if those kids had other offers to choose from.

I don't like to talk about coaches, but...I will say this...just because you played the game does not always mean you will be a capable coach...EVERYONE does not realize that...Some do, but not everyone.
