Lamar Rally Falls Short To Sam Houston State In Slugfest, 15-12

LU hits a season-high three homers

Sam Houston State scored six, two-out runs in the third inning and held off a Lamar rally for a 15-12 win at Vincent-Beck Stadium Sunday.

Each team belted three home runs and combined for 39 hits in the series finale as SHSU (21-13, 9-6 Southland) completed a sweep of Lamar (20-14, 10-5) on day when the win was blowing out for the third-consecutive with gusts reaching 25-30 miles per hour.

Lamar had a season-high 16 hits and three players - Keith Towne, Chris Dunkin and Nik Gumeson - went deep for a season-best three home runs.

The Bearkats opened the game with three runs in the first. Following a double by Todd Sebek, Keith Stein singled him home before Seth Hammock hit a two-out home run to left center. Lamar answered with a run in the second when David Moore scored on a Tyler Link double to make it 3-1 SHSU.

Sam Houston then had its biggest inning with six runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run double by Ryan Weber. He finished the day 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. The Bearkats sandwiched two in the fourth and three in the fifth around a single Cardinal run in the fourth to take a 14-2 lead.

Lamar opened the sixth with four hits before Travis Dunson was called out on a bang-bang play at first that scored the third run of the inning. Jeff Vickers drove in the fourth run with a double to left-center but the Cardinals left the bases loaded and the score 14-6.

Sam Houston plated on in the eighth when Jaime Rohlmeier tripled and scored on the first two pitches of the inning.

Lamar mounted one final rally in the eighth and ninth innings. Towne hit a three-run pinch-hit blast over the wall just to the left of the batter's eye in center in the eighth that made it 15-9. In the ninth, Gumeson, who replaced Dunson at shortstop, hit his first home run of the year to straight-away center that scored Moore and himself. Vickers scored from second on a error by first baseman Nick Zaleski when a routine ground ball went through his legs. Towne came up in the form of the tying run but hit into a double play to end the game and halt the LU rally.

Moore went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Vickers was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Both players scored once as well. Brian Taylor extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single and double. He did however commit his first error of the season when trying to start a possible double play in the Bearkats three-run fifth. He had been clean in his first 146 chances this season.

Tim Erickson (4-1) suffered his first loss of the year after allowing six earned runs - nine total - on 12 hits in three innings. Ryan Tepera (3-2) earned the win for SHSU. He was pulled after five full innings where he allowed just four hits and two runs with four strikeouts.

Lamar slips into a tie for second in the overall SLC Standings with Texas State but still holds a half-game lead over Northwestern State in the East Division. The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday and Wednesday for a non-conference series with UTSA. Tuesday's first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
