Guest abovetherim Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 4/25/2008 Beaumont City Council will issue a proclamation Tuesday (April 29, 2008) recognizing Saturday, May 3, as “Celebrate Lamar University Day.†Lamar University President James Simmons will lead a Lamar delegation for festivities marking the 2008 Red, White & You celebration – designed to emphasize Lamar’s role as an asset to the community and the part it plays in the lives of individuals and institutions throughout the region. The observance will culminate May 3 when the Jimmy Simmons & Friends Encore jazz concert will bring an all-star lineup of alumni musicians together with their former teacher, band director and mentor – now Lamar’s 10th president. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Montagne Center. Simmons, joined by the Lamar Ambassadors, will present City Council members with special gifts in honor of the occasion. Lamar faculty musicians will present a preview of the Simmons & Friends Encore concert. “It is time to celebrate the relationship between Lamar University and our very supportive community – and the way we rely on each other and build on each others’ strengths,†said Juan Zabala, Lamar’s executive director of alumni affairs. “It has been a great year for Lamar University – a decade of continued momentum and growth.
