Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Lamar scored four runs in the final three innings and Brian Needham fanned five in relief as the Cardinals defeated Texas State 9-8 in 10 innings at Bobcat Field to clinch the three-game Southland Conference series Saturday.

Trailing 8-5 after Texas State scored seven in the fifth, the Cardinals rallied with two in the eighth and one in the ninth to force the extra frame. David Moore led off the tenth with a walk and moved to second on Nik Gumeson's sacrifice bunt. Jeff Vickers followed with a pinch-hit double to left-center to put the Cards ahead 9-8.

Needham (3-2) then nailed down his third win with a perfect bottom half that included a strikeout and a pair of groud ball outs. He allowed just one hit after starting the sixth. Lamar starter Justin Walker was rolling along after allowing a run in the first. He had retired 12-stright before allowing seven runs on five hits in the fifth, including a 2-run home run by Thomas Field.

Josh Walter (3-3) took the loss for the second-straight game. He allowed the tying and go-ahead runs on three walks and a hit in one inning of work.

Lamar took the lead in the fourth on Gumeson's grand slam over the leftfield wall. It was his second of the season and the first grand slam of the year by a Cardinal. The last one came off the bat of Collin DeLome at Louisiana Tech on March 12, 2007. Gumeson finished with two hits along with Moore.

Moore hit his second home run of the weekend in the eighth when he belted a 2-run shot over the leftfield wall to cut the deficit to 8-7.

Wade Mathis led off the ninth with a pinch-hit triple and was replaced by Jeremiah Sammy as a pinch runner. Sammy came home on a ball four wild pitch to Tyler Link to tie the game at 8-8.

The game marked the fourth-consecutive extra-inning conference game for Lamar, marking a school record

The teams will close out their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. For Lamar, Ryne Nelson (2-0) will oppose Texas State's Zack Tritz (7-1) on the mound.

That's 4 extra-inning games in last 5 games.  It's good to see them winning again.
