KFDM COOP Posted April 27, 2008 Report Posted April 27, 2008 Region III-4A In Huntsville, Brenham used a victory in the final event to capture its second consecutive boys team title at the Class 4A Region III track meet at Sam Houston State University. The Cubs sat in third place behind Angleton and Beaumont Central entering the 1,600-meter relay. Of the three schools, only Brenham had a team entered. Brenham's quartet came home in 3:19.36, allowing the Cubs to finish with 76 points. Angleton ended up second with 66 points. "Everyone says track is not a team sport, but it is at Brenham," Cubs coach Jerry Newman said. "(The 1,600-relay team) needed to win that event, and they came through for us." The Brenham girls placed third with 50 points. Beaumont Ozen won the team crown with 60 points. Austin Johnson was second with 52. Dominique Duncan of Wheatley was the lone area double winner. Duncan recorded easy victories in the 100 (11.79 seconds) and 200 (23.88). Lizzy Whitney of Montgomery and Ryeea Whigham from Sharpstown each qualified for state in two events. Whitney captured the 800 in a time of 2:15.87 and placed second in the 400 at 56.04. Whigman won the 300 hurdles with a 45.47. She ran a 14.74 in the 100 hurdles, placing her second behind Beaumont Ozen's A'Lexus Brannon, who won three events. Chance Casey of Crosby and Bay City's D'Korion Ford traded first- and second-place finishes in the boys hurdles events. Ford won the 110 hurdles in 14.51, with Casey second in 14.47. In the 300 hurdles, Casey's 37.05 beat out Ford's time of 38.29. Seven Lakes reigned over the boys distance events. Chase Rathke won Friday's 3,200 final with a time of 9:22.21. Second and third went to teammates James Welin and Christopher Jessett. Jessett came back Saturday to take home the gold medal in the 1,600 at 4:16.97. Rathke was second, followed by Welin.
