Guest etbu Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 Bored? Check this article about the Taks today in Chron.Com http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5752137.html
hjhawks Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 I think my argument would hold up... Kelly 480 enrollment vs any 1A or 2 A school in this area.... St. Thomas / Strake Jesuit in houston (Both around 900) vs any 3A or 4A in Houston.... I do think the percentages outnumber public... based on 2 things.... 1) If a parent is paying, there is a little more "vested" interest in seeing their kid succeded. 2) Homelife.... most of these families can afford tutors, aides, software and resources that most cannot. I am not saying that it is fair, but based on my time in both setting, thats how I see it....
bmtdc1996 Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 It looks like this thread has evolved from discussing passing the TAKS to private vs public school. I go along with what SETXBBFAN said about a student needing to suck it up and working hard and pass the TAKS. Too many excuses. Last time I checked, math is math, 2+2 = 4 no matter if you are white or black or any other color. i don't see how the TAKS can be biased. If a student doesn't want to pay attention and doesn't want to do the work or mama and daddy aren't there to push the kid then it is their fault, not the school or the state or anyone else.
CATMAN Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 ??? ??? ??? How can yall be bored,this time off year. ??? ??? ??? ???

I think reverend Wright would disagree...... hahaha

I am not saying that it is fair, but based on my time in both setting, thats how I see it.... A couple of things: 1) A 480 enrollment would need to be compared to a 3A school and not 1A or 2A 2) Sounds to me as if you are insinuating that there are not the same number of parents in a pubic school who are affluent enough to provide tutors, aides, software, and other resources. I don't believe that is the case. You and I work at the same school and I can PROMISE you there are just as many affluent parents here who care and are willing to do whatever for their kids to make sure they succeed. The wealth is more visible at a private school because that is what keeps the doors open....and therefore, the visible involvment of the parents. The wealth is not as visible at a public school because it is not necessary to keep the doors open.
hjhawks Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Not talking about our school.... but public schools in general.... Central, WOS, Memorial, etc.... Anyhow TAKS is now over..... I can't wait to hit the beach!
