This is not how the Barbers Hill baseball team wants to enter the playoffs.

The Eagles took it on the chin Saturday afternoon in a 12-2 loss to New Braunfels Canyon in a warm-up game. Canyon scored six unearned runs in the first two innings as Barbers Hill lost its second game in a row to fall to 23-5. The Eagles will open the playoffs this week in a best-of-three area series against Bay City. The site has yet to be determined.

“Mostly what happened was seven physical errors and numerous mental errors,†Barbers Hill coach Gil Stalbaum said. “I don’t really have the answer, I don’t know why we’re not playing well right now. But it is not a good time to be playing bad, we have our work cut out for us.â€

The Eagles did get work for all of their pitchers with Ross Hales getting tagged with the loss in one inning of work to fall to 8-2 on the year. Hales gave up two unearned runs and Hunter Silva gave up four unearned runs in two innings. Kendall Thamm gave up six runs, four earned in two innings while Johnathan Kelley did not give up a run in mop-up duty.

Silva gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI triple to score Cody Clifton. Silva was 2 for 3 at the plate and Clifton was 1 for 4 and Hales was 1 for 2 to account for all four hits on the day.

“The wind was a nightmare and the way that we played was even worse,†Stalbaum said. “We’re a little down right now.â€

The Eagles meeting with Bay City will be the second one in as many years. Last season, Barbers Hill won the 2007 regional quarterfinal series in a 2-0 sweep.

The Blackcats advanced to the area round in a sweep over Dickinson, winning the first game 4-3 and the second 4-0.
