Guest Indian Chief Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 North Forest picks name for merged school Forest Brook, Smiley students now North Forest High Bulldogs By ERICKA MELLON Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle Say goodbye to the Forest Brook Jaguars and the Smiley Eagles. Students from the once-rival high schools now will have to rally behind the North Forest High School Bulldogs. The North Forest school board agreed Monday on the name and mascot for the high school, which will replace Forest Brook and Smiley this fall. After years of debate, the board voted in March to merge the two high schools because of drastic declines in student enrollment and a multimillion-dollar shortfall. The name change also came with some controversy with a few board members expressing concern that alumni didn't have enough input. "I think it was unfair the way it was done," said trustee Barbara Gaston, a Smiley graduate. But she added she's happy to to see the schools merged. Both high schools in the North Forest Independent School District are less than half full this year, and officials estimate a combined enrollment next year of about 1,780. That's down from 2,450 students five years ago. The school, despite its new name, will be housed on the Forest Brook campus, which is smaller but in better condition than Smiley, according to district officials. Forest Brook, built in 1972, underwent renovations after Tropical Storm Allison flooded it in 2001, and it had a nearly $2 million makeover this summer after a vandalism incident. Career and technology classes will continue to be held at the W.G. Smiley facility. Interim Superintendent William Jones told parents at a meeting last week that the merger was prompted by economic concerns, but he described it as an opportunity to improve the academics. Both high schools have earned the state's "academically unacceptable" rating for the last two years. With the merger, the past ratings likely will carry over but the Texas Education Agency has not made a final decision. Students, staff and community members were allowed to vote on the high school's new name, mascot and colors. North Forest High School won big, earning 801 votes. Smiley Brook High School came in second place, with 39 votes. Other nominations included Obama High School (13 votes), Northeast High School (11 votes), MLK High School (7 votes) and George W. Bush High School (1 vote). The winning colors were black and gold. The district's student population is 70 percent black, 29 percent Hispanic and less than 1 percent Anglo this year.
SFA85 Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Damn, you merge an Eagle with a Jaguar and a Bulldog pops out lol. I hope and pray the Smiley football staff or at least their head coach is there. I hate to see them go the way of Wilmer-Hutchins ISD....
Guest A-TOWN Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 So its North Forest Bulldogs, is the new Baytown Goose Creek Memorial are the Patriots
PURPLE 4EVER Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Obama High School (13 votes) Unbelievable!!! A US Senator from Illinois gets 13 votes! The people in that school district probably would have wanted to reelect Marion Barry in DC or even Nagin in New Orleans. It's a wonder they couldn't even run the finances of the school district. That being said... Education is ALL about the kids, not the adults and the alums that run the schools. Hopefully, for the kids sakes in that district, things will improve not only athletically, but more importantly academically.

Come on fella, if Obama does win(and don't turn this thread to a political one), there will be future educational buildings named after him. I'm surprised his name even came up. Nagin's not a bad guy and Barry, well all I can say is, even your current President did coke. Judge not less Ye be judged.... Enough of that. I've got 4 cousins who graduated from FB. Good luck to the Bulldogs of North Forest High....
Guest blade_65 Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 They are going to need some help over there Maybe they ought to call them the North Forest Future Inmates. This is what happens when school is not the most important thing going on in their lives. next it will be survival between the two schools clashing everyday. Who would want their kid to have to go over there for a sporting event and be in the middle of that kind of crap. They should be forced to play all away games no home games this year until they can prove a safe environment for the student athletes. Picture this a basketball game on Friday night in North Forest against BH and fight breaks out in the lobby of the gym between the old school Smiley and Forset Brook. Who would want their child around that if i wanted that then i would move there. I know what you are going to say that could happen anywhere your right but watch the news last year the two old schools hate each other. all the administration did is add fuel to the fire watch and see

Those who live in class houses shouldn't throw stones but I guess @BH being a trash talker on the field/court when winning(I played against BH, OF, Huffman etc) isn't the same......
Guest blade_65 Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 Hold on i am not talking about the athletes at North Forest i am talking about the hall walkers the youths in the two different communities these are the ones that everyone including the athletes at north forest have to watch out for. I watched the news that showed the game that went bad last year at the smiley and forest brook football game and like i said the student are in one school now lets see if they stay out of the news with the same stuff and about the inmates comment just a joke and i know small group will sometimes label the whole group. i am not from BH i just used them in this situation because of their rep

Try not to be an IDIOT SFA (I know its hard). I can't even believe the crap I just read (Even taking the source into account) what do you mean by "I guess they in NF could medicate the kids like alot of kids are @BH"??? I don't even know if this guy "Blade_65" is from BH , so keep your petty IGNORANT statments to your self!! The point of Blades post is the protection of children not BH Vs. the world, you could put any school into that statement and it would fit. Smiley and Forest Brook have a field that you can only get to by going through a metal detector (that should tell you something)!! It's not the kids fault completly the school, communtiy and Parents need to get more involved if they hope for these kides to make something of theirself oneday!
PURPLE 4EVER Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 The sad thing in all of this is that the community adults are failing the kids. The kids have several uphill battles to fight in that school district. The whole situation is just not acceptable. You really have to feel for the kids. Hopefully things will improve with the merging of the two schools.

Last year when BH was playing them in football they had a player get hurt on the field and no one from the Forest Brook side even looked like they cared. The BH coaches and doctor attended to the kid on the field while the FB coaches just casuall strolled over and watched!! There is a lot of good people over there, but as Purple said they have a hard hill to climb to get out.
Guest Luv Ya Blue Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 Hopefully things will get straightened out over there.
