Kirbyville safety Broderick Jackson moved to the small Southeast Texas school from the much-larger Humble High on the outskirts of Houston prior to his sophomore year. The 5-foot-11, 201 pound athlete actually played some games on Humble's varsity as a freshman and his skill showed up quickly at his new home.

Kirbyville safety Broderick Jackson says Texas A&M is his current top school

This past season, while playing both running back and safety, Jackson helped lead the Wildcats to the third round of the state playoffs and an 11-2 overall record. He was named first-team all-district on both sides of the ball. For his efforts, he has gained notice among college coaches.

"Stanford, Rice, Baylor and A&M are the ones that are showing the most interest now," said Jackson. "Texas A&M, Baylor, SFA and Rice have all said they're close to offering and Baylor, I'm supposed to call them and I think they're gonna send a written offer."

However, there are two schools that seem to be standing out at the moment. One of them has caught Jackson's eye while the other has impressed his mother.

"I was actually just calling the Stanford coaches to see if they had checked my transcript," Jackson said on Wednesday evening. "They said I should be fine but I'm waiting to know for sure before they offer. My ACT is a 24 and my GPA was a 2.9 before my junior year but it should be a 3.2 now.

"My mom really likes the school. That's far for me but she really likes it. A&M's my first choice but my mother likes Stanford so I was just checking in on them."

Recently, Aggie coaches have made a couple of trips out to the school and Jackson says he keeps in touch with them as well.

"Coach Jim Turner is my area recruiter for A&M," he said. "He used to be in the Marines. He's a real cool guy. I also talk to (A&M safeties) coach Malone. I call him every week. He says they like my film."

After new head coach Mike Sherman was hired, Jackson says he wasn't sure if the Aggies were still going to recruit him like the former staff had been.

"When they got a new coaching staff, I didn't really know if they'd still be interested and everything," Jackson said. "I went to a junior day but I didn't tell them ahead of time. I just walked in and they weren't expecting me so I guess they really didn't know who I was then since they were brand new.

"Probably about four weeks ago, coach Turner came to watch us work out and talk to my coach and everything. Then, the second visit he came, he brought the defensive coordinator (Joe Kines) with him so I was like, 'Okay, I guess they're interested for real.'

"They wanted to see what kind of person I was and everything before they decided to offer or not. That's why they talked to my coach and did all their research and everything."

Jackson is close to current Aggie quarterback Jerrod Johnson from when they were both at Humble. The two keep in contact and Jackson says he looks to Johnson for guidance in the process.

"I've talked to Jerrod some lately," said Jackson. "He's in Humble right now working out so, when school lets out, that's where I'm gonna go for like two weeks or so and work out. I wanna see how he likes it at A&M as far as with the new staff and everything."

As far as a timetable for a commitment, Jackson says he does not have a definitive one.

"I don't know yet," he said. "I know one thing I don't wanna happen – when signing day comes around I don't wanna be sitting there high and dry. I'll probably try and commit somewhat early, maybe this summer."

As a junior, Jackson finished with 98 total tackles and four interceptions on defense. On offense he rushed for 785 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging close to seven yards per carry.
