Guest coachacola Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 From Bob West: It’s still more than two years off, but an intriguing opener for Lamar University’s football program would be Georgia State. Especially if Dan Reeves decides to become the Panthers head coach, which he is considering after spending the last year serving as a consultant to the school in its buildup to launch football in 2010. The former Dallas Cowboy great was the head coach in Denver when new LU coach Ray Woodard played for the Broncos, and his strong recommendation helped Cardinal AD Billy Tubbs settle on Woodard. Woodard said on Sportsrap Monday night he’d be interesting in playing and possibly opening against Georgia State. The Atlanta-based school, which has an enrollment of 27,000, will play its home games in the Georgia Dome . . And some Lamar baseball talk: Wednesday was certainly a red letter day for Lamar University baseball. Not only did Jim Gilligan’s Cardinals score four runs in the ninth inning to beat Southeastern Louisiana, 8-7, in its Southland Conference tourney opener, but two of Gilligan’s former LU players had memorable nights. Outfielder Micah Hoffpauir, making his first start for the Chicago Cubs, belted two doubles and scored a run against the Astros at Minute Maid Park. Long about the same time in Hagerstown, Md., ex Cardinal Colin DeLome was blasting a pair of home runs, including a ninth inning game winner, to give the Astros Class A Lexington team an 8-7 victory. DeLome, the Buna product, leads the Legends with 10 home runs and 29 RBI. And some ex-Lamar golfers: Two former Lamar golfers did manage to advance to next month’s Sectional level of U.S. Open qualifying and a third is the first alternate from his site. Dawie Van Der Walt, the top player on the LU team that finished 3rd in the NCAA, shot a 69 to tie for first in the local qualifier at Lakeside Country Club in Houston. Chris Stroud, who has struggled on the PGA Tour this season, shot a 71 in Atlanta and won a playoff for the final spot there. Trevor Dodds, who played on one of Lamar’s great teams in the mid ‘80s, tied for third with a 74 at Gateway National in Madison, Ill., but was the odd man out in a five-way playoff for four spots. TexasTerror Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Lamar and Georgia State makes so much sense. They need teams on the slate. Lamar does too. If you guys can get a home-and-home, that'd be a perfect matchup. The atmosphere at that first Georgia State game should be nice and they're going to get strong media attention for their opener. Lamar needs to see if they can get South Alabama too (though the Jaguars are already recruiting some solid talent for their first squad). Woodard needs to get to filling the schedule and the SLC needs to announce what they plan on doing with Lamar coming in. 2011? Or 2012? Of course, the San Marcos 'situation' plays into this as well.
TexasTerror Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 They don't have football yet. Probably will in just a few weeks... ;D
Guest mffl Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 Really? I didn't know they were this close to announcing it. Any idea on who the HC will be?

Posted this earlier on your site...guess you missed it. Local Colleges: UTSA seeks 'green light' for football Web Posted: 05/17/2008 10:54 PM CDT By John Whisler [email protected] UTSA president Ricardo Romo expects approval of a business plan that could lead to the kickoff of Division I football at the school as early as 2011. If the plan is approved by University of Texas System Board of Regents next month, Romo said UTSA could start interviewing coaching candidates by this fall. “We could find someone who can't start right away,†Romo said. “Or, we may find a coach who says, ‘I'm there in September.'†This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up
