Light heavyweights: Wanderlei Silva (32-8-1) def. Keith Jardine (14-3-1)

How: KO, 0:36 of round one

Key moment: Silva absorbed a body kick from Jardine and responded with a right hand to the ear, leading to a quick and brutal onslaught.

Analysis: Those who thought the “Axe Murderer†was on the downside of his career counted him out too soon. Silva displayed the ferocity that made him a worldwide fan favorite during his long reign as PRIDE 205-lb. champion. He knocked Jardine down twice and threw 12 consecutive punches before referee Steve Mazzagatti called a halt to the match. Jardine was down on the mat receiving medical attention for about three minutes after the match before he got up and left the octagon under his own power. – Dave Doyle

Light heavyweights: Goran Reljic (8-0) def. Wilson Gouveia (10-5)

How: TKO, 3:15 of the second round due to strikes.

Turning point: Reljic landed a powerful left to the head that badly hurt Gouveia and sent him down.

Analysis: It was an entertaining, back-and-forth fight. Reljic was scoring early with a lot of hard kicks, which he moved up and down, but Gouveia’s power came into play late in the first. Gouveia ripped Reljic with a right uppercut and was pounding him on the ground, but Reljic kept his composure and worked his way out of danger. Reljic showed his own power in the second. – Kevin Iole

Light heavyweights: Lyoto Machida (13-0) def. Tito Ortiz (16-6-1) via unanimous decision

Judges scores: 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 Machida

Yahoo! Sports score: 30-27 Machida

Key moment: While Machida out-pointed Ortiz the entire fight, the turning point was in round three, when Machida escaped from a triangle choke that Machida later admitted was very close to finishing him.

Analysis: Machida’s style stymied Ortiz most of the way. Ortiz wasn’t able to take him down, and standing, Machida used his point karate style to avoid almost all of the former UFC light heavyweight champion’s offense. The crowd booed the fight at various points because of Machida’s backpedaling. But the undefeated Machida worked on Ortiz’s left leg with kicks and connected with punches and head kicks as counters while Ortiz tried unsuccessfully to chase him down. The key blow was in the third round with a hard knee to the ribs that put Ortiz down, but Ortiz recovered quickly. Ortiz was also in trouble at the end of the first round when Machida surprised him with a takedown and threw rapid punches just as time in the round expired. Ortiz, who was in the last fight of his UFC contract, left the door open for a possible return to the company while praising the fans and UFC owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta in his post-fight interview. But he talked more openly about going to what he termed “greener pastures.†– Dave Meltzer

Light heavyweights: Thiago SIlva (13-0) def. Antonio Mendes (14-3).

How: TKO, 2:24 of the first round.

Key moment: After first getting kicked in the head, Silva managed to get Mendes down and took control once he had Mendes on his back.

Analysis: Silva continued to make his case that he’s an upper-echelon fighter in the UFC’s most talented division. He was wobbled early by the kick to the head and by a few strikes, but he showed a great killer instinct when the fight went to the ground. Silva’s ground-and-pound was awesome. He got full mount and managed to pummel Mendes, forcing him to tap from the strikes. – Kevin Iole
