Guest Jags Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 FROM THE EXAMINER Janet Eaton, a 4-year assistant for the Lamar Lady Cardinals hoop program, is leaving Beaumont to become the women's head coach and assistant athletic director at Wylie College in Marshall, Texas. Eaton will takeover for Johnetta Hayes, who left for an assistant job at the University of North Texas. Wylie College is a NAIA school that plays in the Red River Athletic Conference. They finished 2nd in the RRAC last year and fell to Langston (Oklahoma) in the finals of the conference tournament. Wylie College then received an automatic berth in the NAIA Women's National Tournament, which was their first ever. They advanced to the second round by defeating Azusa Pacific (California), 69-63, then was eliminated by Freed-Hardeman University, 75-68. Wylie College finished 29-7 last year and Coach Hayes was named the RRAC women's coach of the year. This will be Wylie College's third coach in four years.
Guest abovetherim Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 Huge congratulations. This is a great opportunity for Coach Eaton at Wylie College.
Guest mffl Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 I thought she got offered the head job at Nicholls?
Guest abovetherim Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 She did but didn't feel it was the right place and time. This is a great gig for Coach Eaton. Maybe she'll still come to town once a year and play an exhibition game against the Cardinals. I'm happy for her and her career.

Maybe she'll still come to town once a year and play an exhibition game against the Cardinals. I'm happy for her and her career. She got offered the Nicholls job? Never saw her name associated with it. That's interesting. Nicholls by the way made a magnificent hire that got my attention. I'm a big fan of their new coach, seen her in action and met her on two or three occasions. She's going to be good for that program and if you do anything positive with them, you have a shot to take a bigger job. Good luck to her... Wiley College is a rough job. The previous coach was a former Rice Owl player by the way and is on what should be a solid staff at NT.
Guest mffl Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 Well Tamara Abalde spit in Wiley College's face last year with 44 points. TT, there was a news article with her name in it and i heard from several people she was offered the job.
TexasTerror Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 TT, there was a news article with her name in it and i heard from several people she was offered the job. Wonder if she was offered before they had a "list of five finalists that includes Robert "Bo" Browder, head women’s coach at Xavier; Kevin Johnson, assistant men’s coach Nicholls State; Arrianna Smith-Martin, assistant professor Nicholls State; Mary "Dobee" Ronquillo-Plaisance, head women’s coach Loyola University; and Scott Stoecher, assistant women’s coach Louisiana Tech." This is what was in the Houma newspaper, where I got my information over a week ago. According to an interview I heard after the hire, Nicholls asked for permission to talk to Plaisance a month before the hiring took place. This is why I question that she was offered the job. Perhaps they asked to speak to Eaton and she did not want to interview for it? Nicholls is a better job than Wiley. If you can turn around Nicholls, you are going to go somewhere and get paid handsomely for it.
Guest abovetherim Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 Lamar Assistant Janet Eaton Named Head Coach at Wiley College Eaton leaves Lamar after four years May 30, 2008 BEAUMONT - After spending the last four years as an assistant coach with the Lamar University women's basketball program Janet Eaton is leaving the confines of the Montagne Center to become the head coach at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Eaton played a key role the Lady Cardinals rise to the top of the Southland Conference East Division. This season, as a member of head coach Larry Tidwell's staff, she helped Lamar to their first winning season since the 1991-92 season. "From day one Janet Eaton has put Lamar University first," Tidwell said. "Her loyalty, passion for the game and love of our student athletes has been second to none. The Lamar family is happy for Janet, but we're sad because she was such a huge factor in everything we accomplished this past year." Eaton served as the Lady Cardinals interim head coach for the final five games of the 2006-07 season, guiding LU to a pair of wins over Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana to close out the regular season. The wins helped Lamar clinch the No. 7 seed in the Southland Conference tournament in Houston. Overall Eaton's record as the interim head coach was 2-3. Prior to coming to Lamar, Eaton served as director of athletics, head women's basketball coach and a teacher at Xavier Prep in New Orleans, La. She was named Metro Coach of the Year, Co-Catholic Coach of the Year and Orleans Parish Coach of the Year. Eaton also guided her 2002 team to district, bi-district and regional championships. Prior to her time at Xavier Prep, Eaton spent five years at St. Bernard High School. She was coach of the year in 1998 and `99, leading her team to district and bi-district titles in both years. In addition to coaching, Eaton's credentials also include collegiate playing experience. From 1992-94, she played shooting guard under legendary coach Mary D. Teamer at Dillard University. Originally from Eastabuchie, Mississippi, Eaton was a prep star at South Jones High School under Philip James. She helped South Jones to the 1988 Mississippi High School State Championship, completing the season with an undefeated 37-0 record. Eaton earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in health and physical education from Dillard in 1994. She added a masters of education from the University of Phoenix in 2001. http://lamarcardinals.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/053008aaa.html
Cat22 Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 Any rumored replacements? I'm wondering if an LU grad coaching high school locally is being considered!
Cat22 Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Lamar could not give her more $$ than she is making now?
Guest DickVitale Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Tidwell is NOT filling the spot...Got that FIRST hand. He feels that she may return very soon. Coach Eaton really wants to be an athletic administrator. THATS her goal, which is why she left Lamar to be Asst AD and head womens coach at Wiley.
Guest mffl Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Saving money for more trips to Europe. Or all over the world... you know how Tidwell works. ;D
