Five Cardinals Runners Set for Midwest Regional

Quest for berth to National Championship begins on Friday

LINCOLN, Nebraska - Five Lamar University track athletes will take on the top individuals in the region this weekend, when they hit the track in Lincoln, Neb. for the Midwest Regional Championship hosted by the University of Nebraska at the Ed Weir Track on Friday and Saturday.

Clerc Koenck, Jessika Johnson and Toni Sylvester will represent the Lamar women at the regional, while Michael Gauthier and Francis Kasagule will run for the Cardinal men.

The top five times in every event qualify for the National Championship Track Meet, held June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa. The NCAA may also award a minimum of five at-large bids in each event for the national championship meet.

Johnson will be the first athlete to take the track for Lamar for the women's 100 meter hurdles at 2:40 p.m. She enters the meet with a season-best time of 13.68 seconds which ranks 17th in the region and 70th in the NCAA this season.

Gauthier will be the first men's representative to run for LU when he takes to the track at 3:40 p.m. for the 100 meter dash. His season-best time of 10.42 seconds ranks him 18th in the region and 54th among all NCAA 100 meter runners.

Sylvester will be the final sprinter to hit the track on Friday afternoon when she steps on for the women's 400 meter dash at 4 p.m. She enters the meet with a season-best time of 54.50 seconds which ranks 20th in the region and 100th in the country.

The final race on Friday will see Kasagule in the men's 5,000 meter run. His best performance of the year was a 14:01.94 which ranks 13th in the region and 53rd in the NCAA this season.

On Saturday Koenck will run in the finals of the women's 1,500 meter run which begins at 4:20 p.m. She enters the meet with a season-best time of 4:23.11, which ranks 6th in the region and 34th in the NCAA this season.

The NCAA Midwest Regional meet is one of four regional meets being held this weekend. The others are the East regional meet at the University of Florida, the Mideast Regional at the University of Arkansas and the West Regional at Cal-State Northridge.
