CROSBY — The best thing about spring football for Crosby head coach Kevin Flanigan is that he is 3-0 in spring football games.

The next best thing is to see the progress the team has made before it breaks for the summer.

The Cougars gave Flanigan several things to smile about Friday night as the White team scored two touchdowns in the first half and held on for a 12-6 win over the Red. The Red made a game of it in the fourth quarter but an interception by Nic Collins sealed the win.

“We saw some good things with the offensive line and we did a good job of running the ball,†Flanigan said. “I thought our guys had their eyes up and played well.â€

The teams were divided up in a draft held by the coaching staff. In the first half, it looked like the White coaching staff did its homework as their team rolled out to a 12-0 lead.

The defense was just as dominant as the offense as it held the Red team to four yards of total offense and no first downs.

After winning the toss, the White team scored on an eight-play drive that totaled 70 yards. Chance Casey did the bulk of the damage with 28 yards on two rushes and a pass reception for 18 yards. Casey’s 17-yard run around corner of the defense gave the White a 6-0 lead.

The White team held the Red team on its first possession and both squads traded fumbles to give the ball back to the White 30 yards away from paydirt. Quarterback Sam Malchar made sure the White capitalized as he drove the team down the field and ran the ball in from a yard out to give the White a 12-0 lead.

The White threatened to add to its lead in the third quarter as it drove the ball down inside the red zone.

The bulk of the damage coming on a 38-yard screen pass connection between Casey and Malchar on third and long. The drive came to an end when Casey was stopped at the 11-yard line on fourth-and-10, one yard short of a first down.

With the game winding down, the Red put together the best drive of the game for either team, going 89 yards on 12 plays.

Cameron Trench had a 26-yard run on the drive and Matthew Guillory added a 12-yard run on a reverse to place the ball at the five-yard line. Quarterback Justin Herrera went over the top of the defense and found Ashton Martin for the score to make the score 12-6.

The Red team took possession late in the game, but a Herrera pass was tipped and intercepted by Collins to seal the win for the White.

Trench led all rushers with 78 yards on 11 carries. Casey had 37 yards on three carries and finished with 56 yards on two receptions.

Malchar completed 7 of 14 passes for 108 yards and ran for 25 yards on five carries. Herrera was 5 for 10 for 24 yards, one touchdown and one interception and Dominique Merker was 4 for 8 for 34 yards passing.

Who are your top four teams?

Dayton

King

BH

Crosby?

That looks about right this year ,but the next this district will get interesting. :o Dayton will always be good ,but they will lose some off their Greatness next year IMHO.  BH will start moving toward a strong team that is just now making its way into highschool. IF North Forest can find a coach to make those boys beleive they could be outstanding. Baytown Memorial will be in their second year and will have some talent from the area's that they pull from (North of I-10) and then you have Kingwood Park which is growing like crazy you can bet they will be in the mix at some point. Crosby will be building this year and be stronger the following season as well!!!!! The next 2-4 years looks to be interesting!

Oh yeah they will take some bumps, but I think both of these area's are capable of producing some talent. Depends if they can develope the coaching staff to go with it.

Crosby will win every game in district except against dayton.  BH and King does not have anybody on the field that is even in Chance Caseys League.  Crosby only will need to block 7 out of the 11 for him to score.  Might be the best athlete in the area (at runningback), only one near him is Christian Micheals.

I know that he definately stands out on the field. The boy can move and he is fast, the real deal for sure.

people are predicting Dayton to win based on who they have coming back. 6 or so returning on either side of the ball with 5+ games of playoffs experience from the previous 2 years says a lot. Oh well, guess we'll just have to wait until the season starts.
