KFDM COOP Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Sterling’s Alexander signs with Lamar By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published June 2, 2008 In her heart, Sterling’s Ashley Alexander always knew that she would attend Lamar University. The fact that the Lady Cardinal track team offered her a scholarship was merely icing on the cake. Alexander, who qualified for the Region III-5A meet in three events, accepted a scholarship to Lamar’s Beaumont campus, where she will compete in the long jump and the triple jump. “I was going to go to Lamar anyway, but this will help my parents and I will get to keep running which is a big plus,†Alexander said. “I thought about attending other schools but when I got to the Lamar campus, I didn’t want to go anywhere else. The classrooms are small and it will be easier to get to all of my classes.†Alexander won the High Point Award for the Lady Rangers this season and placed third in the District 21-5A meet in the long jump, triple jump and the 4x400 meter relay. According to Sterling head coach Christie Speights, the best is yet to come. “I think Ashley really hasn’t reached her potential yet which is a good thing,†Speights said. “In college, they fine tune you. I feel really confident about her. She knows what she wants and she is really headstrong.†Alexander will join a Lady Cardinal team that tied for sixth in the 2008 Southland Conference Track and Field meet won by Sam Houston State. Alexander is looking forward to making her mark at Lamar and helping the team move into the championship hunt, knowing that it will take a lot of work. “I want to do really good and I want to get a lot better by the time that I graduate,†Alexander said. “I am going to have to work extra hard and be dedicated to track. “I won’t cheat myself. It will take a lot of adjustments and the pressure will be on me. There is a scholarship riding on this.†While at Lamar, Alexander will pursue a degree in nursing, citing a love of helping people. “I want to get my masters and become a nurse practitioner,†Alexander said. “I love the medical profession and I love taking care of people.â€
