McGinty brings heat to Bayou Bowl

By Dave Rogers

When North Shore’s football team moves in alongside Sterling and Lee in the new District 21-5A lineup next fall, the Mustangs will bring a 70-game district win streak with them.

Jeremiah McGinty, the Houston Chronicle’s Greater Houston offensive player of the year, knows a little something about that streak.

But just a little.

McGinty, who combined for 39 touchdowns running and passing and led the Mustangs to a 14-1 overall record last year, was only the North Shore starting quarterback for a year.

“It was pretty hard,†he said of the wait, “but I knew that my chance was going to come. I just hung in there, worked out hard and did what I had to do when it was my time.â€

There should be no waiting this week when McGinty checks in for the Bayou Bowl.

The sixth annual high school all-star game between Texas and Louisiana kicks off Saturday at 8 p.m. at Stallworth Stadium.

McGinty and the other all-stars check into town Tuesday to begin two- and three-a-day practices to prepare for the game.

This will be the second postseason bowl game for McGinty, who will play this fall at Kilgore College.

He threw the winning touchdown pass in a 14-13 victory for his team in the Space City Classic earlier this year.

“It was a good experience,†he said of the first-time event held at the University of Houston’s Robertson Stadium.

But he’s really looking forward to the Bayou Bowl.

“It’s going to be a nice experience,†he said. “I know we have a lot of events during the week and that people that have played in it are now in the NFL.

“Now we’ve got the chance to do some of the things they got to do.â€

One thing McGinty isn’t afraid to do is compete.

He and Rockwall’s Braden Smith are the two quarterbacks on the Texas All-Star roster this week.

“It’s all about competition,†said the North Shore ex. “You always have somebody waiting to take your spot. You just have to work hard, practice well and try to come out and do the same in the game.â€
