KFDM COOP Posted June 6, 2008 Report Posted June 6, 2008 OC shutout at MLB draft; Jasper star goes in 11th Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader Southeast Texas struck a few notes in the MLP Draft Friday afternoon, yet Orange County was pitched a shutout. The major hit for Southeast Texas was Jasper outfielder Malcolm Bronson being selected in the 11th round by the Kansas City Royals with the 325th pick. Hunter Cervenka of Baytown Sterling was selected in the 27th round by the Boston Red Sox. Bronson is also signed on to play baseball at McNeese St. University in Lake Charles, La. The outfielder is still pondering whether to hit the MLB system or head off to college. “I am still weighing those options,†Bronson said. “Being draft is a dream come true for me. It was one of my goals for the last few years.†Bronson has not talked to the Royals since the initial call telling him he had been drafted. “It was great hearing the news,†Bronson added. “I was surprised yet it made me real happy. I was not worried about not being selected on Thursday. I slept just fine.†Bronson was a key factor in the Bulldogs’ run to the District 21-3A and state championships in 2007. The Bulldogs were taken out in the regional semi-finals this past season. Lamar University starting pitcher Tim Erickson was in the 37th round with pick No. 1,124 by the New York Mets. Erickson, a senior, finished the season 8-3 with a 3.83 ERA in seven starts. Erickson’s teammate at Lamar Justin Walker, a Nederland graduate, was selected in the 41st round with pick No. 1,229 by the Cincinnati Reds. Walker, a junior, was 2-2 on the year in seven starts with a 4.85 ERA. print this story email this story comment on this story
