KFDM COOP Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 Cooper shines again; North gets by South Former Smiley receiver hauls in game-winning TD DeAundre Cooper wanted one last chance to shine on the high school football stage. That's why the former Smiley receiver opted to play in the 2008 Blue Chip Classic at Delmar Stadium on Saturday night. And shine Cooper did. He had two touchdown catches for a total of 122 yards, leading the North team to a 13-12 win over the South. Cooper, who is headed to Prairie View A&M in the fall, was named the 2008 Blue Chip MVP, an honor he shares with former blue-chippers Selvin Young and Brian Iwuh. "This was a fun game to come play in and I am really glad I decided to," Cooper said. "To be on the field with these guys who I have played with and against for so long was really a nice way to end my high school career." A fourth-quarter 73-yard touchdown catch was another good way to end it. With the South leading 12-7, former Smiley quarterback and teammate to Cooper, Darron Guillory hit Cooper in stride. "Once I had the ball, I knew I could take it in for the touchdown," he said. "I was smiling for a few minutes after that one." The South team had an offensive star as well in Milby's Josh Field. He scored both of his team's touchdowns, first on a 9-yard run and later on a 2-yard rush. The North team leads the series 5-3, but this is the first time in three years that the North team won the game. Winning coach Lionell Crawford, from Smiley, said that the game was a great indication of the talent in the area. "These were two good football games and this was them after three days of practice, so I think that said a lot about the kind of talent we had in this game tonight." he said.
