jr1979 Posted June 12, 2008 Report Posted June 12, 2008 The Central Lady Jags basketball team looked really good tonight in their game against HF at Lady Jag gym. The won by about 20 pts, with their NEW Big Time post player, Hypheenia Janise, leading the way with a double double (14 pts, 12 reb.). They faired well from the charity stripe and played very AGGRESIVE on defense, which is nothing new. They are a very young squad and will benefit a great deal from this summer league. Coach Fontenot, is doing a great job running this league, and the teams involved will benefit also. The games are played every Mon and Thurs from 3pm to 9pm ending the last week of games on 07/07/08. If you have any questions or concerns, you can email me or just simply reply to this message.
Bobcat1 Posted June 13, 2008 Report Posted June 13, 2008 The paying to get in is ridiculous. This is the first time they have ever done this. We already had to pay to play and our shirts were all the wrong sizes. >
Hawks4Life Posted June 13, 2008 Report Posted June 13, 2008 I cannot believe, with the economy in the state that it is in, that Central would begin charging a $2.00 door fee. They already make money with a concession. We pay $40.00 to play 8 games in four weeks. These games are certainly not competitive as in other summer leagues. Its a way for area school players to stay in shape and just have fun. Furthermore, as I told the door lady last night, charging should have been mentioned in the communication when signing these girls up.

I was shocked when I had to pay to get in the game. If all that money went to the girls program, then I would not mind paying the 2 dollars. I bet it does not. It probably goes toward the BISD superintendent car allowance fund. Did I just say that? Your right summer league is for fun. You can't judge a team by summer league games. Sure these girls want to win but they are out of shape and they probably have not picked up a basketball since the season was over. Not all of them just some.

The team fees should cover all of that. This is a fun league and great way for the girls to play, have fun, and enjoy their friends in a "non-pressure" environment. It's just one more headache when parents and friends have to shell out money "just because". > >
whsalum Posted June 13, 2008 Report Posted June 13, 2008 If they are playing from 3-9 they may have to charge to pay the officials. They would have to have several crews to cover that many games. If not they should pull the ticket booth down and let the folks enjoy the games for nothing, there not meant to be a money making venture.

I have been involved with summer league for 5 years and they have never charged at the door before. There is 15 teams with probably 10 players per team. 150 kids times $40.00 equals $6,000.00 dollars. This is just a guess, but lets say they pay the officials $20.00 a game that is $280.00 dollars a night times 8(Games) equals $2,240.00 dollars (Based on two officials per game) The shirts have been donated in the past and I am sure the same can be said for this year. The math does not add up. Like I said before if this money goes to the girls program then I am OK with it. The girls programs get shafted all the time. If the money does not go to the girls then I am not happy. The girls program deserves this money. They earned it. Can someone tell me that the girls program at Central will receive the profit from summer league?
whsalum Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 Not sure what the summer league officials make but it's probably more than 20 a game.I have never seen a charge at the door either.Normally the cost of the jersey covers all expenses.I had the pleasure for several years to coach a summer team that played in the Kountze league and Duane and Travis do a great job of running that one. These leagues should be strictly used to develop the kids skills and keep them in the gym.I'm not sure the UIL would let you put this money back into your program.
Guest bleed orange Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 The head girls basketball coach at Central does a good job of running the summer league. From what I am hearing, it was not her decision to charge at the door. I heard it was the high school principal.
hjhawks Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 In fairness to Central... there are extra costs associated with hosting a league... 1) Lights... (power isn't free) 2) Insurance risk (usually this is added to the current policy) 3) Custodial work (some one has to clean up the popcorn my daughter throws everywhere... etc...

I do understand all that hawk. But I do not feel sorry for BISD. If they can afford to pay their superintendent $350,000.00/per year than they can afford lights, insurance and clean up.
hjhawks Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 i agree with that.... hahaha What if BISD gave out gas cards at the summer league games.... do you think it would boost attendance?

YES I DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wait a minute, if they do that then the superintendent would only get one care allowance instead of two. He won't go for that. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Slam14 Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 This is summer league, and I understand that not every foul is going to get called, but I've been very surprised at how well some of these games have been called. The referees must have stepped up their game too. (Did I say that out loud?) Heck...some of these have even turned into basketball games! I hope this trend continues and carries over into the season. "Thank you" zebras.
Guest bleed orange Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 I agree. They should call fouls because it is a running clock. It is to their advantage.
jr1979 Posted June 19, 2008 Author Report Posted June 19, 2008 SORRY I HAVEN'T POSTED IN A WHILE, I'VE BEEN OUT OF TOWN. I'M NOT SURE OF WHAT CHARGES ARE CHARGED OR FOR WHAT THEY'RE BEING USED FOR, BUT THIS IS GREAT FOR THE GIRLS AT HTIS LEVEL, B/C THERE'S NOT MUCH OF THIS GOING ON IN OUR AREA. THIS IS A GOOD THING GOING ON, THE GIRLS ARE GETTING TO COMPETE, STAY OR GET IN SHAPE, AND GEL WITH THEIR TEAMMATES. IT ALSO GIVES THE YOUNG LADIES SOMETHING TO DO FOR PART OF THE SUMMER. I UNDERSTAND UR GRIPS, BUT THE BIG PICTURE IS THAT THIS IS ONLY MAKING US, (THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE AREA), THAT MUCH BETTER FOR THE COMPETITION. P.S. AS A PLAYER, U WILL GET OUT OF IT WHAT U PUT INTO IT. (GO HARD!!!!!!!!!!)
Bobkat Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 How did you all look against Orangefield? Orangefield beat them 38 - 35 this past Thursday. I believe that was Central's first loss of summer league. Both teams are pretty dang good and will have successful seasons. I believe Central comes to Orangefield this year, should be a dandy!!!
jr1979 Posted June 29, 2008 Author Report Posted June 29, 2008 Wasn't able to make it to the game. Sounds like a lot of good defense was played r/t the low score or both teams missed alot of shots?
PoppaBearstarr Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 who can get me a summer league schedule I would support it but I dont know where or when these games are played. Please somebody help me.
