Lamar University lost one of its staunchest and most loyal basketball fans with the passing of Nederland businessman/philanthropist Ed Hughes. Cardinal basketball coach Steve Roccaforte was so close to Hughes he was a pallbearer at the funeral and the program included a photo of Hughes with several LU players during a Thanksgiving Dinner at the Pompano Club. “I tried to have lunch with him every Tuesday I was in town,†Roccaforte said. “He was a special guy who really cared about our team and players. He followed Lamar, home and the road, from the time Jack Martin was coaching and Billy Tubbs was playing. Us winning the conference championship last season probably meant more to him than anybody.â€

Sounds like we lost a great man in the community.

Roccaforte, by the way, is close to naming three new assistant coaches. One of them will apparently be former Memphis, New Orleans and McNeese State head coach Tic Price. Price was on Johnny Jones’ staff at the University of North Texas last season. Roccaforte would neither confirm or deny that Price is headed to Beaumont, but said an announcement would be forthcoming soon. Price would be a great addition, both from a recruiting and coaching standpoint.

We knew about 2 assistants but not 3. Did we lose Coach Holmes?

Nederland and Lamar ex Brian Sanches appears to be making the most of a second shot at establishing himself in the major leagues. Now a member of the Washington Nationals, after spending parts of two seasons with the Phillies, Sanches is 2-0 with a 4.32 ERA in nine appearances out of the Nationals bullpen. Sanches attributes his improvement to a learning curve he needed to scale to pitch at baseball’s top level, and to a more relaxed situation with the Nationals . Buna’s Colin DeLome, also a Lamar ex, is making his presence felt in the Astros system. DeLome was named the Astros Minor League Defensive Player of the Month in May, got a promotion from Lexington to a higher Class A league in Salem, Va., and homered in his first at bat. He later added a double and went 2-for-4.

Best of luck to both former Lamar Cardinals in their baseball careers.

Lincoln ex Donald Cole, who led Sam Houston State to the 2003 Southland Conference championship and an NCAA bid, was recently named Player of the Year after leading the Feni Idistrija team in Macedonia to the Eurobasketball Championship. Cole was also named MVP in the championship game, after scoring 40 points. Lamar fans shouldn’t have any problem remembering Cole. He saved some of his best games for when he played the Cardinals.

A little SHSU news for our friend Texas Terror.

My guess would be they introduce Price on Tuesday and possibly announce the other assistants.  Tuesday night should be a huge media day for Lamar sports.  They need to show us all the plans for the stadium too.
