Looks like he's gotten alot of work done over a very brief amount of time.

From RCSSPORTS:

COLLEGE NEWS!

Walt Yates Jr is paying dividends after being on the job at Lamar State College - Port Arthur less than two weeks.  As a result of Yates' connections, the school has inked Wheatley HS duo Joseph Franklin 6'4 f 2008 and DJ Stearn 5'11 cg 2008 in addition to Lincoln Charleston 6'6 f (Beaumont Central 2008) and Jacovin Buckner 5'11 cg 2008 for their incoming class.  However, the steal of the week may come after landing transfer Chance Rose 6'0 cg (Aldine HS 2007) who starred on the California JUCO circuit last season.  This Rose kid won me over two summers ago after witnessing him chase a loose ball and run into a wall - head first, only to bounce right up and hustle back to action.

Pack of skittles for that colorful character...  I did not know he had buckner too... That kid just plays the game, but I don't know how he will fare playing at a higher level with no real position.

It seems like they totally wiped the slate from last year and started an entirely new squad!?

Coach Cole did not wipe the slate clean. All of the freshman on the 2007-08 team were invited to return, but that doesn't mean they will be back.

Several of those freshmen most likely won't be eligible in the fall because of grades or because they haven't completed the required number of credit hours.

It looks like point guard Jason Williamson and his brother, forward George Williamson, will be returning. I'm not sure about the others. Nobody really is until we see the names of the students enrolled in the Basketball class for the fall semester.

Marcus Houston, who played for the Seahawks in 2006-07, has indicated that he intends to return to school this fall. He was a contributor late in that season and could help this year's team.

I should have included that Marcus Houston is a 6-2 guard who graduated from Jasper High School in 2005 and was a 1st team All-District 20-3A selection in his senior year. He averaged 9.0 ppg and 5.1 rpg for the Seahawks in a reserve role during the 2006-07 season.

Coach Cole is in the process of competing the siging process for several players. Five players currently are listed on the NJCAA website as having officially signed letters of intent to play for Lamar State in 2008-09:

Corey "Dallas" Bean, a 6-3 forward from Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, who was a 1st team All-District 22-4A selection.

Jacovin Buckner, a 6-1 forward from Port Arthur Memorial High School, who was one of the leading scorers on his team this year .

Adrian Fontenot, a 6-6 forward from Baytown Sterling High School, who was on the 1st team All-District 21-5A for the past two years.

Chan-Cious Rose, a 6-0 guard from Houston, who played for Ohlone College (a junior college) in California this past year.

Joshua Washington, a 5-11 guard from Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was a 4A district MVP this year and a two-year selection for All-State honors by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association.

Didn't Rose go to Gulf Shores Academy or whatever school Gerald Green went to? It got shut down but I know he was recruited by La-Monroe, LU and other schools so i guess it's a possibility he could make his way to Lamar after this year.

Oh and is Chris Roquemore on this list? Does he have more work to do before he enrolls in the fall?

From what I could find out, Rose played at Heritage Christian Academy in Cleveland as a senior.

This past season, Rose was the leading scorer for Ohlone Community College, which reached the Northern California Junior College Conference semi-finals. He was averaging 14.6 points-per-game going into the confernce tournament.

Get your facts straight. First off, Buckner is not '6"4, he's '6"1, and he did not lead his team to the playoffs this year. Memorial did not make the playoffs this year.

LamarStatesports,

Do you represent the school in some official capacity?

In answer to the question from tigersvoice, I am the public information coordinator for the college.

When Lamar State added men's basketball and women's softball in 2004, the college did not add a sports information person. Those responsiblities just got added to my job.

Before anyone has a chance to correct me, I need to ammend the post regarding where Chan-Cious Rose played high school basketball. (I'm getting confused with all these recruits.)

Chris Roquemore actually was the one who was at Heritage Christian. I didn't find anything about Rose, except that he was an all-star football player as a sophomore at Aldine High School in Houston, and he led his California juco team in scoring in 2008.

So you know all about the suprise signee that has not been mentioned yet?
