KFDM COOP Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 South holds off North in TGCA all-star girls basketball game GRAND PRAIRIE — Adaora Elonu of Elsik scored 20 points as the South All-Stars held off a late rally by the North All-Stars for a 72-67 win at the 2008 TGCA All-Star game at Grand Prairie High School’s Turner Gym. Elonu, a Texas A&M signee, scored 10 points in each 18-minute half and was name the game’s Most Valuable Player. The North squad had possession with 8.8 seconds remaining and trailing by three points. Kristen Horde of Lamar Consolidated stole the ball and passed it to Elonu with three seconds remaining. Elonu made two free throws for the game’s final margin. The South led 17-10 midway through the first half. The North made a late run and cut the South lead to 33-32 at the half. Conroe’s Britni Martin made two 3-pointers to start the second half as the South went on a 13-2 run. Martin, a Sam Houston State signee, made five 3-pointers in the game and finished with 16 points. The South squad led 50-37 early in the second half. The North squad went on a 15-3 run and cut the South led to 53-52. The South would never relinquish the lead, however. Temple’s Kaetlyn Murdoch kept the South ahead by dominating the defensive boards. Murdoch, a University of Denver signee, recorded seven of her eight rebounds in the second half. Martin’s last 3-pointer with 1:50 remaining gave the South some cushion as its lead rose to 68-60. Elonu added a layup following a North turnover to give the South a 70-60 lead. Rockwall’s Shelby Adamson scored 13 of her team high 15 points in the second half to keep the North squad close. Sydney Carter of Desoto converted a three point play with 15.6 seconds remaining to cut the South lead to 70-67. Martin and Mansa El of Cy-Fair each led the South squad with four assists. Horde finished with three points and two assists.
